Chapter 5 - THE DAWN OF A NEW LIFE

Three months later.
The snow had melted away from the rolling hills of Oregon, replaced by the vibrant, warm blossoms of late spring.
Brooke sat on the sunlit back patio of the Lake Oswego estate—her estate now. The sprawling house that once felt like a gilded cage had been transformed into a home filled with peace, safety, and genuine love.
Rowan, now five months old, was giggling softly as he lay on a yellow blanket on the grass, kicking his tiny legs and clutching his favorite blue rattle. He was growing stronger every day, no longer struggling for breath, his eyes bright and full of life.
Brooke took a sip of her coffee, watching him with a deep, unbreakable smile.
The fallout for the Halstead family had been swift and devastating. Reid had been ousted from his position as CEO of Halstead Global Enterprises by the board of directors, who wanted nothing to do with the criminal investigations swirling around his name. Celia’s social standing had evaporated overnight, reduced to whispers and closed doors at every country club in the state. Morgan Vance was facing felony charges for fraud and perjury.
They had thought Brooke was weak. They had assumed her postpartum exhaustion and gentle nature meant she could be walked over, manipulated, and discarded.
They had severely underestimated what a mother would do to protect her child.
The back screen door opened softly, and Sister Clara stepped onto the patio, carrying a tray of fresh pastries.
"How are my favorite people doing out here?" Sister Clara asked warmly, setting the tray down on the table.
"We’re wonderful, Sister," Brooke said, standing up and stretching her arms toward the warm sun. "Truly wonderful."
"You know, Brooke," Sister Clara said, looking out over the pristine lawn and the blooming gardens beyond, "some storms don't just test us. They clear out everything that was rotting, so we can finally plant something real."

Brooke walked over to the blanket, scooped her healthy, happy son into her arms, and pressed a soft kiss to his forehead. She looked out past the iron gates, feeling the warm breeze on her face, knowing that the fear of the past was gone forever.
She had survived the dark. And she was finally home.
