Chapter 1 - The Hidden Envelope

The stone walls of the old family cellar were damp, smelling of wet earth and forgotten decades. Mason Harper pulled a heavy wooden drawer from the built-in masonry shelving, his fingers searching the dark recesses. With a sharp click, something shifted, and a cream-colored envelope fluttered down, landing squarely on the concrete floor beside his boots.
"Grandma," Mason called out, bending down to snatch it up. "Someone put a letter inside the wall."
His grandmother and mother stepped out from the shadows of the corridor. As Mason straightened up, his eyes scanned the faded handwriting on the front of the envelope.
"For Mason Harper," he read aloud, his voice dropping an octave as a cold shiver ran down his spine.
The envelope looked impossibly old, adorned with vintage foreign stamps and water-stained edges. His grandmother stepped forward, her face turning pale as she stared at the paper in his hands.
"Who told you to open that?" she demanded, her voice tight with sudden panic.
"It already had my name," Mason replied defensively, pulling a weathered piece of paper and a black-and-white photograph from the flap.
The photograph showed a young couple on their wedding day, smiling brightly into a camera from a lifetime ago. Mason stared at the man's sharp jawline, realizing with a start that the face looked hauntingly familiar—like a mirror reflecting a future he hadn't lived yet.

"Grandma," Mason whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Is this the first Mason?"
His grandmother closed her eyes slowly, the silence in the cellar stretching like a taut wire. "Yes," she whispered.
