Chapter 4 - THE COURTROOM RECKONING

Courtroom 402 was packed. The air was thick with tension as Judge Thomas Henderson—a notoriously strict, uncorruptible judge known for his zero-tolerance policy toward judicial manipulation—sat behind the high oak bench.
Reid sat at the defense table next to Morgan Vance, both of them dressed in immaculate designer suits. Morgan looked bored, tapping her fingernails against the wooden table, assuming this would be a quick dismissal of a hysterical mother.
Across the aisle, sitting beside Marcus Vance, was Brooke. She wore a simple navy blazer, her posture straight, her expression composed and calm. She looked down at Rowan, who was resting in a baby carrier beside her, cared for by a trusted nurse from the shelter. She wasn't the broken, exhausted woman they thought they had crushed. She was a mother fighting for her child.
"All rise," the bailiff announced.
Judge Henderson settled into his seat, his sharp eyes scanning the room before locking onto Reid and his legal team.
"Counsel," Judge Henderson began, his voice deep and cutting. "I have reviewed the emergency filings presented by petitioner Reid Halstead, as well as the counter-motion and evidentiary exhibits submitted by counsel for Mrs. Brooke Halstead. Let me be clear: I have rarely seen a more egregious, malicious attempt to subvert the law."
Reid blinked, leaning over to whisper to Morgan. "What is he talking about?"
Morgan’s face lost its color. She gripped the edge of the table. "I... I don't know, Reid."
"Mr. Vance," the judge said, addressing Marcus. "You may play the primary audio exhibit for the court."
Marcus stood up, walked to the courtroom’s audio system, and pressed play.
The heavy mahogany doors of the courtroom seemed to hold their breath as the crystal-clear speakers began to broadcast the conversation between Celia Halstead and Morgan Vance.
“Once the court grants emergency guardianship to me on the grounds of her mental instability, Reid will file for divorce, and she’ll be forced out with nothing...”
Celia’s voice—arrogant, calculated, and ice-cold—echoed off the high ceilings of the courtroom.
In the gallery, Celia gasped, half-rising from her seat before her attorney frantically pulled her back down. Reid’s head whipped around to stare at Morgan, his face turning an alarming shade of pale grey. The entire room could hear the meticulous planning of how they intended to ruin Brooke, steal her child, and discard her like trash.
The recording played for a full ten minutes, exposing text messages, medical forgery plans, and financial concealment schemes.
When it finally clicked off, absolute silence descended upon the courtroom.
Judge Henderson looked down from the bench, his expression like thunder. "Ms. Vance," he said, staring directly at Reid’s attorney. "You drafted fraudulent medical evaluations, conspired to commit perjury, and suborned fraud upon this court. Effective immediately, your license to practice law in the state of Oregon is suspended pending a criminal grand jury indictment."
Morgan slumped forward in her chair, burying her face in her hands as court bailiffs stepped forward to escort her out of the room.
Judge Henderson then turned his piercing gaze toward Reid and Celia.
"Mr. Halstead," the judge continued, his voice dripping with contempt. "You allowed your family to orchestrate a psychological and legal assault against your wife, fabricating claims of incompetence to steal custody of an infant. Furthermore, our forensic audit has revealed that you attempted to conceal millions in marital assets in offshore accounts."
"Your Honor, please, I was misled—" Reid stammered, standing up frantically.

"Silence!" Judge Henderson banged his gavel, the sound echoing like a gunshot. "As of this moment, full legal and physical custody of minor child Rowan Halstead is granted exclusively to Mrs. Brooke Halstead. Furthermore, I am awarding Mrs. Halstead ninety percent of the marital estate, including full ownership of the Lake Oswego residence, alongside an immediate order of protection barring you and your mother from coming within five hundred yards of her or the child."
Reid stood paralyzed, his empire, his reputation, and his fortune shattering around him in a matter of minutes. He looked across the aisle at Brooke, but she didn't even bother to look back.
