Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT SHELTER AND THE ALLY

The wind howling off the river cut through Brooke’s coat as she drove across town, away from the glittering, gated neighborhoods of Lake Oswego and toward the industrial edges of Portland. She couldn't go to friends; Reid’s family had their hands in every corporate and social circle in the state. Anyone she knew would be a liability.

She drove until she reached St. Jude’s Family Refuge, a quiet, secure shelter operated by a woman named Sister Clara, who had known Brooke’s late father.

When Sister Clara opened the heavy metal door at 2:00 a.m. and saw Brooke standing there with a sleeping infant in her arms and terror in her eyes, she didn't ask questions. She simply pulled them inside into the warmth, wrapped a blanket around Brooke’s shoulders, and sat her down with a cup of hot tea.

"Tell me what happened, child," Sister Clara said gently, her eyes full of weathered wisdom.

Brooke laid the flash drive on the wooden table. "They’re trying to take my son, Sister. Reid and his mother. They’ve fabricated medical reports, altered legal papers behind my back, and conspired to declare me an unfit mother."

Sister Clara picked up the flash drive, her expression hardening. "The Halstead family has ruled this city by intimidation for decades. They think wealth places them above the law."

"They think I have no money and no voice," Brooke said, her voice steady, though her hands shook. "But I have twenty-seven minutes of audio proving intentional fraud, conspiracy, and premeditated parental alienation."

"Then we don't hide," Sister Clara said, placing a comforting hand over Brooke’s. "We strike first. I have a contact—Marcus Vance, no relation to Reid’s little mistress. He’s a bulldog of a family law attorney who despises corrupt elites more than anything in this world. Let me make a call."

By dawn, Brooke was sitting in a secure, confidential office downtown across from Marcus Vance—a sharp-eyed lawyer with silver-streaked hair and a reputation for destroying corporate dynasties in a courtroom.

Marcus listened to the entire twenty-seven-minute audio file without blinking. When it finished, a slow, predatory smile crept across his lips.

"Well, well," Marcus murmured, leaning back in his leather chair. "Celia Halstead is remarkably arrogant when she thinks no one is listening. And Morgan Vance has committed gross malpractice by drafting fraudulent legal filings." He looked up at Brooke, his gaze softening with genuine respect. "You didn't just save yourself, Mrs. Halstead. You just handed us a silver bullet. Are you ready for a war?"

Brooke looked down at Rowan, who was sleeping peacefully against her chest, completely unaware of the storm brewing around them. She looked back up at Marcus, her eyes burning with fierce determination.

"Destroy them," she said quietly.
