Chapter 8 - The Awakening

Six months later, the spring thaw had finally reached the high alpine meadows of Rocky Mountain National Park, washing away the remnants of winter snow and replacing them with vibrant fields of mountain wildflowers and rushing streams.
I stood on the balcony of our home in the foothills of Denver, the morning sun warming my face.
The door behind me clicked open, and soft, unsteady footsteps padded across the hardwood floor.
I turned around.
My son—now six months old, bright-eyed, laughing, and taking his very first independent steps—waddled across the rug, his little arms outstretched toward me, balancing on chubby legs before tumbling safely into my lap with a delighted squeal.
I scooped him up into my arms, burying my face in his soft neck, inhaling the sweet, innocent scent of baby powder and sunshine.
"Hey there, little man," I whispered, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "Are you ready to see the world?"
Marcus stepped out onto the balcony holding two cups of hot coffee, handing one to me with a warm, approving smile.
"The board meeting is set for ten o'clock, Claire," Marcus said, leaning against the balcony railing. "Vextor Dynamics has officially completed its merger with Vanguard Tech. You are officially the youngest female majority tech CEO in the state."
I looked down at my son, who was busy trying to grab the silver pen tucked into my blazer pocket, and smiled.
The cliff, the blizzard, the betrayal, and the fall—they felt like a lifetime ago. Michael was locked away in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, forgotten by the world he had tried to conquer. Ashley was facing federal perjury charges awaiting sentencing.
And I was right here—alive, unbroken, and holding my entire world in my arms.
"Let them come," I murmured, tightening my grip around my son as we looked out toward the majestic peaks rising in the distance.
May you like
The ice had tried to claim me. But I had crawled back from the abyss.
And I would never, ever fall again.
