Chapter 2 - The Rescue and the Resurrection

The rescuer’s face was obscured by a heavy tinted visor and a reinforced thermal helmet, but his movements were instantaneous and lethal in their efficiency. He didn't waste a second on useless questions. Within a heartbeat, heavy leather-clad hands were assessing my vitals, checking my pulse, and pressing a portable oxygen mask over my face.
"Hang on, Mrs. Carter," a deep, controlled voice commanded through the comm-link embedded in his gear. "I've got you. We are getting you out of here right now."
Before I could form words, before I could tell him about Michael, about the deliberate push, about the fifty-million-dollar execution order, strong arms locked around me. A harness snapped securely across my chest and thighs, locking my battered body to his frame.
He keyed his radio. "Eagle-One, this is Vanguard Actual. Package secured on ledge four. Winch us up, now!"
The world tilted violently. The howling wind screamed in our ears as the winch hauled us upward into the blinding white vortex. The cold bit at my face, but the numbness was beginning to give way to a searing, agonizing awareness of every bruise, every fracture, every contraction tearing through my battered body.
As we slammed into the cabin of the black rescue chopper, the doors sealed shut with an airtight thud, cutting off the deadly chill of the storm.
Paramedics swarmed me instantly, ripping away my shredded parka, slapping IV lines into my arms, and monitoring the frantic, racing heartbeat of my baby on a portable fetal monitor.
"Her blood pressure is plummeting!" one medic shouted over the roar of the engines. "She's going into active labor—the trauma triggered it!"
I gripped the sleeve of the lead medic, my knuckles white, my vision swimming with black edges. "The... the baby," I choked out, the oxygen mask hissing against my face. "Save my son... please..."
"We've got you, Momma," a woman with calm, steely eyes told me, pressing a dose of pain medication into my IV line. "Push through the pain. We're thirty seconds out from Alpine Trauma Center. Stay with us!"
The helicopter slammed down onto the hospital’s rooftop landing pad with a heavy shudder. Chaos erupted around me—rolling gurneys, flashing lights, shouting doctors, and the blinding white glare of emergency room overheads rushing past in a dizzying blur.
They rolled me straight into the sterile, high-pressure environment of the delivery suite.
Surgeons and OB-GYNs moved with terrifying speed. The monitor beside my bed beeped with a frantic, rhythmic urgency.
"We need to prep for an emergency C-section immediately," the lead surgeon shouted, his voice cutting through the ringing in my ears. "Placental abruption. The trauma caused internal bleeding. We have to get the baby out now or we lose them both."
Masks were pulled over my face. The world began to spin, dissolving into a heavy, chemical fog.
Michael...
The name flashed through my mind like a jagged shard of glass. He thought I was dead at the bottom of the ravine. He thought his fifty-million-dollar payout was secured, waiting for him to cash out and celebrate with his mistress.
As the anesthesia pulled me under into the black abyss, a single vow crystallized in my mind, burning hotter than any fire:
May you like
Let them think I'm dead.
If Michael Carter wanted a ghost, I would give him one. And when I returned from the dead, I would tear his entire world down to ash.
