Chapter 5 - The Corporate Execution

The private conference room on the fortieth floor of the Vextor Tower was designed to project absolute power. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the glittering Denver skyline, while the massive mahogany conference table commanded the center of the room like a throne.

Less than forty-eight hours after my "funeral," Michael Carter sat at the head of that table, looking like a man who had successfully conquered the world.

He loosened his tie slightly, leaning back in his executive leather chair with a smug, self-satisfied grin plastered across his face. Surrounding him were the remaining members of the board of directors, along with Ashley, now sitting proudly in the seat previously reserved for the chief financial officer.

"Gentlemen," Michael began, his voice smooth and oozing false humility. "As we all know, the tragic loss of my late wife Claire has left a significant void in our leadership structure. However, business must move forward. With my new controlling shares and the impending life insurance disbursement of fifty million dollars, Vextor Dynamics is positioned to acquire Apex Tech by the end of the quarter."

He raised a crystal tumbler of scotch, smiling at Ashley.

"To new beginnings," Michael toasted.

Before any of the board members could raise their glasses, the heavy oak double doors of the boardroom swung open with a loud, echoing bang.

Every head at the table snapped toward the entrance.

Standing in the doorway was a team of four armed federal marshals in tactical gear, flanked by two corporate insolvency trustees holding heavy leather briefcases.

And right between them, stepping forward with measured, unyielding steps, was me.

I had discarded the mourning veil. I wore a tailored, charcoal-gray Chanel suit, my hair pulled back in a sleek chignon, my posture upright and unbreakable.

Michael stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the polished hardwood floor.

"C-Claire?" he stammered, his face turning the color of curdled milk. His eyes bulged in sheer, unadulterated terror as he stared at me, as if looking at a rotting corpse walking out of a tomb. "No... no, that's impossible! You fell! I watched you fall!"

"You watched me plunge three hundred feet into a ravine, Michael," I said, my voice cutting through the silent boardroom like a razor-sharp blade. "You left me to freeze to death in a blizzard while you plotted how to divide my family's fortune with your secretary."

Ashley gripped the edge of the table, her fingernails scraping the wood, her face draining of all color. "This is a trick! It's a ghost—she's dead!"

"I'm very much alive, Ashley," I stepped closer, tossing a thick manila folder directly onto the center of the mahogany table. "And so is the federal wiretap recording of your planning sessions in the corporate parking garage."

Marcus Vance stepped into the room behind me, holding a portable audio amplifier and plugging a cord into the conference room's main sound system.

With a single tap on his phone, the room was filled with crystal-clear audio: Michael and Ashley's voices, discussing the hiking trail, the isolation, the fifty-million-dollar payout, and the cold calculation of pushing a nine-month-pregnant woman off a cliff.

The board members stared at Michael in absolute horror, slowly pushing their chairs back from him as if he carried a plague.

Michael fell back against the wall, sliding down to the floor, his breath coming in ragged, panicked gasps as the reality of his total destruction crashed down around him.

"Mr. Carter," the lead federal marshal stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and corporate embezzlement. You have the right to remain silent..."

May you like

I stood over him, looking down into the face of the man who had tried to erase me.

"You wanted my empire, Michael," I whispered softly as the marshals hauled him up and snapped the cuffs onto his wrists. "Now, you get to watch me rule it alone."
