Chapter 6 - The Confession in the Master Suite

The master suite was warm, quiet, and insulated from the chaos of the rest of the mansion.
Alessandro laid Elena down gently against the plush velvet sofa, instructing a shaken Rosa to bring a medical kit, warm water, and fresh clothes immediately.
When Rosa hurried into the room with the supplies, her eyes were wide with shock and unspoken apology. She carefully cleaned the split lip and tended to the bruised shoulder, whispering soothing words to Elena in Italian before Alessandro gently dismissed her.
Alone in the vast, dimly lit room, Alessandro knelt beside the sofa once more. His expression was a storm of conflicting emotions—guilt, fury, and a deep, consuming protective instinct that terrified him.
"I didn't know," Alessandro said, his voice barely above a whisper. "If I had known they were treating you like this..."
"You couldn't have known," Elena replied softly, wincing as she touched her lip. "I was hired to be invisible, Mr. Moretti. I learned a long time ago that making noise only invites punishment."
Alessandro gently took her hand away from her face, holding her fingers in his own massive palm. "Why didn't you tell me? Every time I looked at you across the dining hall, every time I made sure you were assigned to my wing... I wanted to speak to you. But you always kept your distance."
Elena looked down at the floor, a bittersweet smile touching her bruised lips. "Because of who you are, Alessandro. And because of who I used to be."
Alessandro’s brow furrowed. "What are you talking about?"
Elena took a deep, steadying breath. She looked him straight in the eyes, dropping the submissive, quiet demeanor she had worn like a heavy cloak for the last six months.
"You think I’m just a runaway maid with a fake reference letter," Elena said, her voice steady and clear. "You think seventy-three dollars in a checking account is the sum total of my life history."
Alessandro stared at her, suddenly sensing the vast, hidden depths beneath her quiet exterior. "Who are you, Elena?"
"My father wasn't a hotel manager, and my mother didn't work in a diner," Elena said quietly. "My father was Victor Vance—the man who controlled the shipping lanes of the eastern seaboard before your syndicate systematically dismantled his empire ten years ago."
Alessandro went completely rigid. The name hung in the air like a ghost from a bloody war he had fought and won years ago.
"Victor Vance..." Alessandro breathed, his dark eyes widening in disbelief. "He died in prison."
"He did," Elena confirmed, a shadow crossing her face. "And when he died, everything he built was seized, stolen, or burned to the ground. I spent years running, hiding, changing my name, trying to escape the blood of a world I never wanted to inherit. When I found out I was pregnant... I needed a place with high walls and heavy gates. I needed a fortress where no one would ever find me."
She looked up at him, her eyes burning with fierce, unyielding pride. "I chose your house because I knew your security was impenetrable. I never expected the monsters inside the gates to be worse than the ones I was running from."
Alessandro sat back on his heels, completely stunned. The woman he had watched quietly clean his floors for six months wasn't a helpless victim of circumstance—she was the daughter of his most formidable historical rival, carrying his child, hiding in plain sight right under his roof.
And his own family had beaten her.
A dark, dangerous laugh escaped Alessandro’s throat—not of humor, but of pure, cold realization.
"My mother and sister threw you out," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "They thought you were nobody."
"They did," Elena whispered.

Alessandro stood up, walking over to the tall arched window that looked out over the sprawling iron gates of the estate. He watched the rain begin to fall harder against the glass, blurring the limestone walls into gray smears.
"They were wrong," Alessandro murmured. "And by the time I'm finished with them, they're going to wish they had never been born."
