Chapter 5 - The Aftermath of Silence

By Sunday morning, the illusion of family unity inside the Sterling household had completely collapsed into mutual recrimination and panic.

Chloe sat at the kitchen island, furiously jiggling her phone against the marble countertop, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen from a night of hysterical screaming.

“He won’t answer!” Chloe shrieked, slamming the phone down. “Julian has blocked my number! He won’t reply to my texts, he canceled his credit card on our joint wedding planner account, and his friends are acting like I’m a stranger!”

Evelyn was pacing back and forth across the kitchen tile, wringing her hands, her face mottled with furious anxiety.

“I told you not to bring that heavy wrench to the table!” Evelyn snapped, spinning around to glare at her daughter. “You always take things too far! If you had just waited until after dinner, we could have handled her quietly upstairs!”

“Me?!” Chloe exploded, standing up so fast her stool tipped backward and crashed onto the floor. “You were the one who hit her first! You tossed it to me!”

Richard sat at the head of the table, his coffee cup untouched, staring blankly at the wall. The reality of what had happened—not just the violence, but the fact that an outsider had witnessed it and walked away—was finally sinking into his thick skull.

“Stop yelling,” Richard muttered, his voice flat and heavy. “It’s Clara’s fault. She always has to ruin everything. If she hadn't sat there looking so... so stubborn, none of this would have happened.”

Chloe let out a hysterical laugh, tears streaming down her face. “She didn't even yell, Dad! That’s the terrifying part! She didn't yell, she didn't cry, she just... she just looked at us and left.”

Evelyn stopped pacing, her jaw tightening. “She’ll come back. She always comes back. She has nowhere else to go. Without us, she’s nobody.”

But deep down, beneath the layers of denial and lifelong narcissism, a cold knot of dread was forming in Evelyn’s stomach.

Because for the first time in thirty years, the magic words—don't come crawling back—had been met with a quiet, devastating response that changed the rules of the game forever.
