Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a Setup

The chandelier above the dining table cast a brilliant, unforgiving light across the spotless porcelain plates and the silver cutlery arranged with military precision. It was supposed to be a celebratory evening—an official introduction of Chloe’s new fiancé, a rising corporate executive named Julian whose tailored suit and immaculate cufflinks stood out sharply in the modest, claustrophobic dining room of her parents' suburban home.
Clara sat near the corner of the table, her fingers tracing the rim of her water glass. From the very first moment she had taken her seat, she had felt the oppressive weight of a quiet, calculated hostility radiating from across the room.
It wasn't just her mother’s tight-lipped, judgmental scowl or her father’s stoic silence. It was Julian.
Throughout the soup course and the awkward small talk about real estate markets and weather patterns, Julian’s eyes had drifted back to Clara again and again. It wasn't the appreciative glance of a man looking at an attractive woman; it was the cold, clinical stare of an investigator studying a specimen under a microscope. Every time Clara looked up, she caught him watching her with an unsettling mixture of wariness and curiosity.
Then came the turning point.
Julian had paused, cutting his roast beef, before looking directly at Clara. “Chloe tells me you work in freelance graphic design and digital archiving. How long have you been doing that?”
Clara opened her mouth to answer, her voice polite and even. “About four years now. I mostly work with—"
Before she could finish the sentence, her mother, Evelyn, snapped. Without a warning or a flicker of hesitation, Evelyn’s hand swept across the table, wielding a heavy, grease-stained metal wrench—an absurd, terrifying object to have brought near a dinner setting—and brought it crashing violently across Clara’s cheekbone.
The impact was a dull, sickening thud.
Pain exploded across Clara’s face, searing hot and blindingly intense, throwing her head backward so violently that her teeth clicked together.
Instead of gasping in horror, the entire dining room erupted into laughter.
It wasn't a polite chuckle or a nervous giggle; it was a chorus of cruel, gleeful mockery. Her father, Richard, chuckled darkly from the head of the table. Chloe burst into loud, shrill laughter, leaning back against her chair.
“At least you’re pretty now,” Chloe mocked, wiping a fake tear of mirth from her eye. “Though a little asymmetry suits your personality.”
Clara gasped for breath, her hand flying to her throbbing, rapidly swelling cheek as warm blood trickled from the corner of her lip.
“One hit isn’t enough,” Chloe added, her eyes flashing with malicious delight.
Evelyn carelessly tossed the heavy metal wrench across the polished mahogany table. It slid through the gravy boat, clattering loudly before landing squarely in front of Chloe.
“Your turn,” Evelyn said smoothly, as if handing over a salt shaker.
Instinct took over. Clara threw her hands up, shrinking back into her chair, trying to shield her head as Chloe lunged forward with a wicked grin. But before Clara could even push herself upright, two heavy, calloused hands clamped down around her wrists with the crushing strength of a vise.
Her father.
Richard leaned over, pinning Clara’s arms to the arms of the chair with effortless, cruel authority, locking her in place for her sister’s amusement.

Clara struggled wildly, her breath catching in her throat, her vision blurring at the edges as the shock wave of pain reverberated through her skull.
Then, as her father’s fingers dug deeper into her skin and Chloe raised the heavy wrench high above her head, everything went completely dark.
