Chapter 2 - The Crack in the Facade

The first thing Clara felt when consciousness dragged her back to the surface was the unforgiving hardness of the oak floorboards pressing against her shoulder blade.

Her ears rang with a high-pitched, deafening whine, like a distant air raid siren. Somewhere just above her line of sight, a heavy dinner plate scraped harshly across the wooden table, followed by the sound of silverware clinking together as if nothing extraordinary had just occurred.

Then she heard her sister’s voice, cool, unbothered, and dripping with casual dismissal.

“See? She always makes everything dramatic.”

Clara forced her eyelids to flicker open. The harsh chandelier light stabbed into her retinas, making her wince. She was lying half-sprawled beside the dining table, her father’s fingers still clamped tightly around her left wrist like iron shackles.

But as her vision cleared, she noticed something that stopped her breath entirely.

Julian, the golden-boy fiancé sitting across the table, wasn't laughing anymore.

The color had drained completely from his face, leaving him looking as though he had just witnessed a horrific accident on a highway. He wasn't looking at Chloe; he was staring in wide-eyed disbelief at Evelyn, then down at the heavy, blood-flecked wrench in Chloe’s hand, and finally at Richard, whose knuckles were white as he continued to hold Clara down against the floor.

Julian’s entire posture had transformed from polite corporate composure to stunned, frozen shock.

Slowly, deliberately, Julian stood up from his chair, his napkin falling forgotten onto his seat.

“Let her go,” Julian said. His voice was low, controlled, but laced with a dangerous tremor that brooked no argument.

Richard gave Julian a sidelong glance, his expression hardening into one of annoyed paternal authority, as if he had momentarily forgotten there was an outsider sitting at their table.

“Stay out of family business, son,” Richard grunted, tightening his grip on Clara’s wrist just a fraction more. “She’s just throwing a tantrum. It’s what she does.”

Chloe immediately reached out, her fingers latching onto Julian’s sleeve with a desperate, whining whine. “Baby, don’t listen to her. She does this all the time. She’s unstable, she always tries to ruin everything for our family.”

Clara ignored the roaring in her ears. Pushing through the waves of nausea, she managed to bend her right knee, planting her boot firmly against the floorboards. She stopped fighting her father’s grip—a sudden cessation of resistance that visibly confused him for a split second.

Instead of yelling, instead of crying out, Clara turned her head and locked her swollen, tear-filled eyes directly onto Julian.

“Why were you staring at me?” Clara asked, her voice cracking, raspy, but terrifyingly clear in the quiet room.

Chloe snapped her head around, her face twisting with sudden rage. “Seriously? That’s what you care about right now?! You’re bleeding all over the rug and you’re asking about that?”

Julian didn't look at Chloe. He couldn't take his eyes off Clara’s bruised, bleeding face.

“Because she told me to watch you,” Julian answered.

The words hung in the air like falling glass.

Chloe’s hand instantly dropped off Julian’s arm, as if she had touched a live electrical wire. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Julian turned his gaze slowly toward Chloe, the polite, infatuated fiancé completely vanishing, replaced by a man who had just realized he was standing in the middle of a snake pit.

He explained—not to Clara, but to the room at large—what Chloe had spent the entire week doing. According to Julian, Chloe had orchestrated a relentless psychological campaign leading up to this dinner. She had warned him repeatedly that Clara was deeply disturbed, hostile, deeply jealous of Chloe’s engagement, and chronically prone to violent outbursts and wild fabrications. Chloe had drilled it into his head that if Clara complained about anything, if she looked mistreated, or if she cried, it was all an elaborate, manipulative act designed to garner sympathy and destroy the family harmony.

Suddenly, the intense, probing way Julian had watched Clara from the moment she walked through the front door made horrifying sense. He hadn't been judging her; he had been looking for the monster Chloe had promised him he would find.

Instead, he had found a victim.
