Chapter 5 - The Systemic Wipeout (1500 words)

By 7:00 PM, Sarah was sitting frozen in the center of the living room, staring blankly at the polished hardwood floor. The arrogant, coffee-sipping woman who had mocked my old F-150 four hours ago was completely broken.

Major Vance stood by the dining table with a secure satellite laptop, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with military efficiency.

“Phase Two initiation,” Major Vance announced. “Asset freeze authorization confirmed by the Department of the Treasury under Federal Financial Crimes Enforcement Network guidelines.”

Sarah slowly raised her head, her eyes rimmed red. “What... what does that mean?”

“It means,” I said, pulling up a chair nearby, “that every single financial mechanism you rely on to sustain your illusion of luxury has just ceased to exist.”

Major Vance tapped a key. “Target’s primary checking account at First National Bank: Frozen. Target’s secondary savings account: Frozen. Target’s three personal credit cards: Canceled due to fraudulent activity flags.”

Sarah reached frantically for her designer leather purse on the table, pulling out her phone. She tapped the screen wildly, trying to log into her banking app.

A bright red alert popped up across her phone screen: ACCOUNT SUSPENDED - CONTACT FEDERAL COMPLIANCE OFFICERS IMMEDIATELY.

“My money!” Sarah shrieked, dropping the phone onto the rug as if it had burned her. “You can’t freeze my money! I have seven thousand dollars in that account!”

“Correction,” Captain Ramirez stated coldly. “You had seven thousand dollars stolen from Colonel Miller’s authorized user credit line. That money has been legally clawed back and returned to the Colonel’s primary asset vault. Your actual remaining liquid balance across all accounts is precisely four dollars and twelve cents.”

Sarah gripped the edges of the sofa, her breathing rapid and shallow. “How am I supposed to buy food?! How am I supposed to pay for a hotel?!”

“You aren't,” I said. “Because you are leaving this property in twenty minutes, and you won't be checking into a hotel.”

At that moment, my phone chimed. It was a video call from Maui.

I hit accept. Claire’s beautiful face appeared on the high-definition screen, framed by lush tropical palm trees and the warm sunset of the Pacific. She was sitting on a private balcony, a flower in her hair.

“Daryl?” Claire’s voice was warm, but her eyebrows pulled together in concern when she saw the sharp military uniforms surrounding me. “Honey, what’s going on? Major Vance called my resort and told me there was an emergency deployment at the house.”

I tilted the phone screen toward Sarah.

Sarah gasped, scrambling toward the phone like a drowning woman reaching for a lifeline. “Claire! Claire, oh thank God! Tell your husband to stop! He’s gone crazy! He brought military officers into the house! He froze my bank accounts and gave Lucas to David! You have to save me, Claire!”

Claire didn't scream. She didn't gasp. She simply stared at her sister through the screen, her expression turning from confusion to profound, icy disappointment.

“I already know, Sarah,” Claire said, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage.

Sarah froze. “What?”

“Daryl sent me the security camera footage thirty minutes ago,” Claire revealed, tears of anger glistening in her eyes. “I watched you lock my five-year-old daughter outside in the freezing cold. I watched you pour a bucket of ice water over her head while she was screaming for her father. I listened to you laugh, Sarah.”

“Claire, listen to me!” Sarah pleaded hysterically, dropping to her knees in front of the phone. “I didn't mean to! She was coughing! I was just trying to break her fever! I was trying to protect Lucas!”

“You are a malicious, narcissistic bully,” Claire spat, her tone cutting through Sarah’s excuses like a scalpel. “For three months, Daryl let you stay in our home. He paid for your food, your coffee, your clothes, and your wine—all while you treated him like trash because he drives an old truck and doesn't brag about his wealth.”

Claire leaned closer to her camera. “You thought my husband was a broke nobody, Sarah? Daryl is the most honorable, protective man on this planet. He built our life with his own hands while you destroyed yours with your arrogance.”

“Claire, please...” Sarah sobbed, pressing her forehead against the hardwood floor. “Don't throw me out! I have nowhere to go!”

“You have five minutes to gather your personal clothes,” Claire commanded, her voice hardened into steel. “If you are still on our property when that clock hits zero, I’m personally instructing Daryl to press full criminal charges for child endangerment and grand larceny. Goodbye, Sarah.”

The call disconnected with a sharp click.

The living room fell into dead silence, save for the sound of Sarah’s frantic, ugly weeping.

I stood up, adjusting the cuffs of my gray hoodie.

“You heard my wife, Sarah,” I said, looking down at her. “Five minutes. Captain Ramirez, supervise her packing. Ensure she takes only the items she arrived with. Any item purchased using stolen funds from my account remains property of this estate.”

“Understood, Colonel!” Captain Ramirez stepped forward, grabbing Sarah firmly by the arm and hauling her up off the floor. “Move, Target Miller. Master bedroom. Now.”

Sarah stumbled toward the hallway, her boots dragging uselessly against the rug, her grand illusions of power completely shattered into dust.
