Chapter 2 - Hospital Perimeter (1500 words)

The heater in the Ford F-150 blared at maximum capacity, filling the cab with hot air as I tore down the suburban streets toward Memorial Hospital. In the passenger seat, wrapped in two emergency thermal blankets I kept behind the bench seat, Sophia moaned softly. Her skin was alternating between bright red flush and alarming marble-white pallor.

I kept one hand firmly on her small chest, monitoring her shallow breathing while negotiating traffic with the other.

When I pulled up to the emergency room ambulance bay, I didn't bother looking for a parking spot. I threw the F-150 into park right in front of the double sliding doors, hit the hazard lights, and grabbed Sophia in my arms.

“We need a trauma team! Pediatics!” I bellowed as I burst through the automatic doors.

A triage nurse named Brenda immediately recognized the urgency in my voice. One look at Sophia’s shivering form and blue-tinted lips had three nurses rushing over with a mobile gurney.

“What happened?” the attending physician, Dr. Miller, demanded as they wheeled her into Bay 3.

“Severe hypothermia stacked on top of a rapid-onset fever,” I reported with clinical precision. “Internal temperature was spiking around 104 when she was deliberately locked outside in forty-degree weather for over thirty minutes, followed by direct submersion in ice water.”

Dr. Miller looked at me in shock. “Who would do that to a five-year-old?!”

“Someone who is about to lose everything,” I replied softly.

For the next forty-five minutes, I stood in the corner of the trauma bay, a silent sentinel watching the medical staff work. They hooked Sophia up to warm IV fluids, wrapped her in heated air blankets, and administered fever reducers. Slowly, the violent shivering subsided. The monitor showed her heart rate stabilizing, and the deep, terrifying lethargy turned into a soft, natural sleep.

Dr. Miller walked over, wiping sweat from his forehead. “She’s tough, Colonel. The thermal shock was severe—it could have triggered a seizure or acute pulmonary edema if you had arrived ten minutes later. But her core temp is down to 100.2 now. We’re keeping her overnight for observation.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” I said, shaking his hand firmly.

As soon as Dr. Miller stepped out, my encrypted phone vibrated against my hip. I stepped into the hallway to answer.

“Colonel Miller,” Major Vance’s voice cut through the earpiece like a razor. “Unit Alpha has established a tactical perimeter around your residence. Intelligence gathering on Target Sarah Miller is complete. You were right—she’s been busy.”

“Report,” I ordered.

“Target Sarah Miller defaulted on a $45,000 corporate debt in Chicago three months ago. She fled state jurisdiction to avoid a civil subpoena. Furthermore, we ran an audit on the accounts linked to your household. Over the last ninety days, she has embezzled approximately $28,000 from your authorized user credit line by routing funds into an offshore shell account registered under her maiden name.”

A cold smile touched my lips. “She stole from my account while calling me broke?”

“Precisely, sir. Additionally, she forged your signature on a local property management agreement yesterday. She was planning to list your guest house and basement as rental units starting next week.”

“She really thought I was just an uneducated mechanic,” I murmured. “Major, what is our current deployment status?”

“Six black SUVs are staged two blocks from your street. Captain Ramirez has frozen all local bank accounts associated with her name, including the offshore holding. The local police chief—who happens to be a former NCO under your command in Iraq—has been briefed on the child endangerment incident. He is standing by for your direct order.”

“Hold the police,” I commanded. “I want to deliver the news in person. Have Captain Ramirez pull up the satellite feed of the living room.”

“Feed live on your mobile terminal now, sir.”

I tapped my smartphone screen. A crystal-clear, high-definition infrared and optical feed popped up, supplied by an unmarked surveillance drone orbiting two thousand feet above my neighborhood.

On the screen, Sarah was casually lounging in my leather recliner, sipping wine and scrolling through a high-end fashion website on her laptop. She was completely oblivious to the fact that four tactical operatives in civilian clothing were currently standing on the perimeter of her lawn, cutting off all escape routes.

“Major,” I said, walking back into Sophia’s room to kiss her forehead while she slept peacefully under the warm blankets. “Inform the team I am en route. Tell Captain Ramirez to bring the master asset folder.”

“Understood, Colonel. Welcome back to the fight.”
