Chapter 4 - The Financial Trap (1500 words)

Sarah took an involuntary step backward until her calves hit the edge of the dining room table. Her hands were shaking so violently that her gold bracelets rattled loudly against her wrists.
“This... this is a joke,” she whispered, looking frantically at her ten-year-old son, who was cowering behind the sofa. “You’re playing a prank on me because of what happened on the patio! You hired actors!”
Major Vance didn't blink. He unzipped the black leather binder, pulled out a laminated federal ID badge bearing the seal of the Department of Defense and my official photo in full dress uniform—decorated with three rows of campaign ribbons, a Legion of Merit, and the insignia of an Army Intelligence Colonel—and held it two inches from Sarah’s face.
“Target Sarah Miller,” Major Vance said, his voice flat and devoid of warmth. “You are currently standing in the private residence of Colonel Daryl Miller, Director of Special Intelligence Operations, Task Force Vanguard. Any further hostile actions or failure to comply with lawful instructions will result in immediate federal detainment under national security protocols.”
Sarah’s jaw worked silently, but no sound came out. She collapsed heavily back into her chair, her eyes wide with mounting terror.
“Captain Ramirez,” I said, stepping up to the table. “Present the financial audit.”
“Yes, sir,” Captain Ramirez opened a sleek military-grade tablet and pressed a button. A portable laser projector mounted on the side of the tablet flickered to life, projecting a bright, glowing financial dashboard onto the dining room wall.
“Target Sarah Miller,” Captain Ramirez began, pointing to the glowing charts. “Three months ago, you fled the state of Illinois to evade a civil judgment from Apex Commercial Holdings totaling $45,210.66. You entered this residence under false pretenses of temporary shelter.”
Sarah swallowed hard. “That... that was a business dispute! It has nothing to do with Daryl!”
“Correction,” Captain Ramirez interrupted sharply. “It has everything to do with Colonel Miller. Over the past ninety days, you utilized an authorized user credit card issued by Colonel Miller under the assumption of purchasing 'family groceries.' Instead, you executed thirty-seven fraudulent cash-advance transfers routing directly into a primary checking account at First National Bank under the shell entity 'Miller Style LLC.'”
Captain Ramirez tapped the tablet screen. A red flashing warning banner appeared on the wall projection.
“Total unauthorized funds embezzled from Colonel Miller’s account: $28,450.00. Under federal banking statutes, this constitutes Grand Larceny and Fraud exceeding twenty-five thousand dollars.”
Sarah’s face turned an ashen grey. She turned to me, her voice rising to a frantic, breathy pitch. “Daryl! Daryl, please! I was going to pay that back! I was just using it to get my business off the ground! We’re family!”
“Family?” I raised an eyebrow, my tone dripping with pure ice. “An hour ago, you locked my sick five-year-old daughter outside in forty-degree weather. An hour ago, you poured a bucket of freezing ice water over her head and called her a 'burden.' Where was 'family' then, Sarah?”
“I didn't know!” Sarah wailed, tears finally bursting through her heavy mascara, leaving black streaks down her cheeks. “I didn't know she was that sick! I thought she was just exaggerating! I’m sorry, Daryl! Please!”
“Save your tears,” I said, pulling out a chair and sitting down directly across from her. “We haven't reached the best part yet.”
Major Vance stepped forward, sliding a second set of documents across the polished table.
“While you were busy sitting in this house insulting the Colonel’s military service,” Major Vance said, “our cyber-reconnaissance team conducted a complete sweep of your digital footprint. Yesterday at 14:00 hours, you attempted to upload a fraudulent sublease agreement to a public rental platform, attempting to list the basement suite of this residence for $2,200 a month.”
Major Vance leaned in close. “You forged Colonel Miller’s signature on a state property authorization document. That is Identity Theft and Real Estate Fraud.”
Sarah buried her face in her trembling hands, her shoulders heaving with violent sobs. “Please... please don't send me to prison! What about Lucas?! What about my son?!”
I glanced over at ten-year-old Lucas, who was crying quietly by the TV. Despite Sarah’s wretched behavior, the boy was innocent—merely a pawn in his mother’s entitled games.
“Lucas will be taken care of,” I said calmly. “Captain Ramirez, where is target’s ex-husband, David?”
“David Miller is currently parked down the street in an escort vehicle, sir,” Captain Ramirez reported. “He was granted full legal custody of Lucas by an Illinois family court three weeks ago—a court order Target Sarah Miller actively ignored when she kidnapped the child across state lines.”
Sarah snapped her head up, pure shock paralyzing her feature. “David is outside?!”
“He’s been trying to see his son for three months, Sarah,” I said, standing up from the table. “You hid him here, using my house as a shield while telling me David was an abuser. We ran a background check on David yesterday. He’s a high school history teacher with a clean record who was nearly ruined by your false allegations.”
At that moment, the front door opened again. A tired-looking man in a simple coat stepped inside, accompanied by a local police officer.
“Lucas?” the man called out, his voice choked with emotion.
The ten-year-old boy looked up, dropped his video game controller, and ran across the room. “Dad!”
David caught his son in a tight embrace, lifting him off the floor as tears streamed down both of their faces.
Sarah tried to jump up from her chair. “You can’t take him! David, get out of here! Daryl, tell him to leave!”
The local police officer stepped between Sarah and the child, holding up a hand. “Ms. Miller, sit down. We have a certified interstate custody enforcement order signed by a federal judge. Mr. Miller is legally taking his son home tonight.”
“No! Lucas!” Sarah screamed, reaching out desperately as David gently guided the boy out the front door, shielding his eyes from the scene.

The heavy front door clicked shut, leaving Sarah standing alone in the center of the room, surrounded by my uniformed officers, her family gone, her lies exposed, and her financial crimes fully documented on the wall behind her.
“You stripped my daughter of her dignity today, Sarah,” I said, stepping into her line of sight. “Now, you get to watch yours disintegrate.”
