Chapter 4 - THE FATHER’S SHADOW

The paramedics arrived within minutes, swarming the penthouse suite with oxygen tanks, IV drips, and stretcher gear. They stabilized Clara Sterling just enough to load her into a gurney and rush her under police escort to Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital, where the twins were currently resting in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Marcus and I remained behind in the wrecked penthouse, securing the crime scene while waiting for the forensics team to process the chaos.
I paced the length of the ruined living room, my mind racing. "She didn't want to throw them away, Marcus. Look at this place. This wasn't a professional hit or a calculated cover-up. She was packing in a panic. She was bleeding, terrified, and trying to flee."
"Or she was trying to destroy the evidence," Marcus countered, kneeling beside a shredded trash can where several torn documents had been tossed. He used the tip of a pen to flip open a charred piece of paper bearing the letterhead of a Swiss bank account. "Look at this. Wire transfers totaling half a million dollars, sent from Arthur Sterling’s corporate foundation directly to a holding account controlled by Clara."
"A payoff," I realized. "To keep her quiet. To make her disappear after the pregnancy became public knowledge."
"Exactly," Marcus said, standing up and brushing off his knees. "And when she refused to abort, or when she decided she wanted a real life for her children instead of a hush-money check... things went sideways. But where is Sterling in all of this? Let's find out."
Marcus pulled out his department phone and dialed a direct line to precinct dispatch. After a brief, clipped conversation, his expression darkened.
"Well, well, well," Marcus muttered, slipping his phone back into his pocket. "Arthur Sterling’s corporate headquarters just reported him as 'unavailable' for an emergency board meeting this morning. But his private jet filed a flight plan out of O'Hare two hours ago, heading south toward the Caribbean."
"He's running," I said, a surge of adrenaline hitting me. "He thinks Clara failed, the babies are dead in a ditch somewhere, and he’s cutting his losses before the police connect the dots."
"Not on my watch," Marcus growled, grabbing his jacket. "Let's move."
We didn't bother waiting for local backup. We commandeered my cruiser, lights and sirens flashing, tearing through the morning traffic toward the private aviation terminal at Midway Airport. If Sterling’s Gulfstream was still on the tarmac, we had a window to ground it. If it was already airborne, we were going to need federal warrants and FAA coordination.
Ten minutes later, our cruiser slammed to a halt at the security gate of the private hangar district. An airport security guard rushed out, waving his arms frantically, but Marcus flashed his badge before the man could even speak.
"State Police! Federal jurisdiction! Where is the Sterling Gulfstream—tail number N-seven-four-zero-alpha?" Marcus demanded.
The guard pointed a shaking finger toward a massive hangar at the far end of the tarmac. "It... it hasn't taken off yet! Maintenance delay! They're still sitting on the apron!"
We didn't wait for permission. I floored the accelerator, driving the cruiser right through the open security gate, spraying gravel as we rocketed across the tarmac toward the gleaming white private jet sitting idle against the gray winter sky.
As we pulled up directly beneath the jet's boarding stairs, the aircraft door popped open. A towering man in an expensive tailored charcoal suit appeared at the top of the stairs, looking down with an expression of cold, aristocratic annoyance.
Arthur Sterling.
He looked exactly like his press photos—silver-haired, impeccably groomed, radiating an aura of untouchable wealth and power. But as he saw two state troopers leaping out of a battered cruiser with their hands resting on their sidearms, the cool mask slipped.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Sterling shouted down from the stairs, his voice echoing across the empty tarmac. "Do you have any idea who I am? I demand to speak to the chief of police immediately!"
"You can speak to a federal judge, Mr. Sterling!" Marcus shouted back, drawing his badge and flashing it upward. "Step down from the aircraft! Right now!"
"This is harassment! I am leaving the country on urgent business!" Sterling protested, taking a step backward toward the cabin door.
"Your urgent business of abandoning your own newborn children in a trash bag on Interstate 76?" I yelled, my voice cutting through the whine of the jet's auxiliary power unit.
Sterling froze. The color drained from his face so fast it looked like someone had turned off a light switch. He gripped the metal handrail of the boarding stairs, his knuckles turning white.
"I... I don't know what you're talking about," Sterling stammered, his aristocratic composure shattering completely.

"Your assistant, Clara Sterling, is currently bleeding out in a hospital bed, Mr. Sterling," I said, stepping to the foot of the stairs and staring up at him with unyielding fury. "And the twins you told her to throw away like garbage? They're alive. They survived. And they are going to tell us everything."
Sterling stood paralyzed for three agonizing seconds. Then, slowly, his shoulders slumped. The billionaire developer, the titan of real estate, the man who thought money could buy away human life, descended the stairs step by step with his hands raised, surrendering to the bitter reality of his own monstrous crimes.
