Chapter 3 - THE GATHERING AT THE PLAZA HOTEL

The annual charity gala for the New York Metropolitan Arts Foundation was the one night of the year where the city’s elite, its politicians, and its underworld bosses crossed paths under a thin veneer of expensive champagne and designer tuxedos.

Traditionally, Alessandro attended alone, standing in the corner like a dark phantom, collecting nervous nods and terrified deference from everyone in the room.

This year, the invitation specified plus guests.

When our black armored town car pulled up to the grand entrance of the Plaza Hotel, flashbulbs exploded like lightning against the tinted windows. I sat nervously in the back seat, wearing a modest, deep emerald silk dress that Alessandro had quietly had custom-made for me the week before. Sophia sat between us, wearing a matching green velvet bow in her curly hair, clutching a small plastic toy horse she refused to part with.

“Are we going to see paintings, Mama?” Sophia asked, looking up with wide eyes.

“We are, sweetie,” I smiled softly, smoothing her dress.

Alessandro reached across the leather seat and placed his hand gently over mine. His touch grounded me instantly. His thumb brushed reassuringly against my knuckles.

“Stay close to me, Elena,” he said quietly. “Tonight, I am going to make sure everyone in this city understands the hierarchy.”

When the heavy glass doors opened and we stepped into the grand ballroom, the murmur of nine hundred conversations died away in an instant.

He didn't walk in alone.

The most feared mafia boss in New York walked through the center of the ballroom with a three-year-old child riding high on his broad shoulders, her small hands clutching his silver-streaked hair like reins, while his other arm rested securely around my waist.

Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through dry grass. Glances exchanged between rival bosses turned to looks of sheer, unadulterated shock.

Vincent Marcone stood near the champagne tower, his glass frozen halfway to his mouth, surrounded by his lieutenants. His eyes narrowed with pure venom as he watched us approach.

Alessandro led us to the premier table directly in front of the dais—a table traditionally reserved for the city mayor and the head of the commission.

As we sat down, Marcone broke away from his group and marched straight toward our table, his face mottled with arrogant fury. He didn't care about the cameras or the polite society around him; his pride had been wounded in front of the entire underworld.

“Moretti!” Marcone sneered, stopping at the edge of our table and slamming his hands down on the white tablecloth. “Have you lost your damn mind? You’re parading a common maid and a brat through the high society like a clown show! Is this what your empire has come to? Nursing a charity case?”

The entire ballroom went dead silent. Cutlery stopped clinking against crystal. Every eye in the room locked onto our table, holding its collective breath.

Sophia buried her face against my shoulder, startled by the shouting.

I felt my blood run cold, but before I could flinch, Alessandro stood up.

He didn't raise his voice. He didn't reach for a weapon. He simply towered over Marcone, his presence radiating an aura of absolute, suffocating dominance that made the younger boss instinctively step back a half-pace.

“Vincent,” Alessandro said smoothly, his voice slicing through the silence like a razor blade. “You mistake peace for weakness. You mistake the laughter in my home for a crack in my armor.”

“You’re weak, Alessandro!” Marcone spat, losing his temper. “You’re surrounded by domestic trash, and you think you can—”

CRASH!

Alessandro swept a crystal champagne flute off the table with the back of his hand, shattering it against the floor right at Marcone’s polished Italian leather shoes.

“Listen to me very carefully, you pathetic excuse for a boss,” Alessandro roared, his voice echoing off the vaulted chandeliers with terrifying authority. “This woman and this child are my life. They brought my home back to the living. And anyone—anyone—in this room or this city who so much as looks at them with disrespect will find their entire organization dismantled brick by brick, starting with you, Vincent.”

Marcone’s face turned the color of curdled milk. He looked around the room and realized, with sudden, sickening horror, that none of the other syndicate bosses were backing him up. In the underworld, power respected power. And Alessandro Moretti had just declared war on anyone who threatened his happiness.

Swallowing hard, trembling with humiliated rage, Marcone turned on his heel and stormed out of the ballroom without another word.

The silence hung heavy for three seconds before the orchestra nervously resumed playing a soft jazz waltz.

Alessandro slowly exhaled, his rigid shoulders relaxing as he sat back down beside us. He turned to Sophia, offering a gentle, reassuring smile.

“It’s okay, sweetheart,” Alessandro murmured, wiping a tiny tear from her cheek. “The bad man is gone.”
