Chapter 4 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE EMPIRE

The fall of Mitchell Carter and Victoria Vance was swift, merciless, and broadcast across every major news network in Georgia by Monday morning.
The shell companies were dismantled. The illegal rezoning permits were revoked. The Vance family’s real estate empire suffered a catastrophic liquidity crisis, and Mitchell found himself facing federal indictment for securities fraud and corporate espionage.
Ava sat at her desk at Han Media, watching the live news report on her computer screen. The anchor was detailing the simultaneous raids on V&M Holdings and the sudden restructuring of the city's commercial development board.
Her phone buzzed on the desk.
“Penthouse office. Now.” — Daniel.
Ten minutes later, Ava walked into Daniel’s office without knocking. The room was empty of guards for once, the evening sunlight pouring through the glass and casting long shadows across the floor.
Daniel stood by the window, looking out over the glittering expanse of Atlanta. He had his suit jacket off, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the lean, corded muscle beneath.
“It’s over,” Ava said softly, leaning against the doorframe. “Mitchell’s career is completely destroyed. The Vance family is pulling out of the market. You won.”
Daniel turned slowly, his dark eyes locking onto hers. “We won, Ava.”
He walked toward her, closing the distance between them step by step until the air between them felt thick, charged with an unspoken tension that had been building since the moment they collided at the airport.
“You used me as a prop for your revenge,” Ava said, though there was no heat in her voice, only a strange, trembling curiosity. “And I used you to save my pride. A fair trade?”
“Except for one detail,” Daniel murmured, stopping just inches away from her.
Ava’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. “What detail?”
“From the moment you wrapped your arms around me in that terminal, Miss Brooks, you weren't a prop.” Daniel reached out, his warm fingers gently cupping her chin, tilting her face upward. “You were the only thing in that entire city that caught my attention.”
Ava’s breath hitched. “Daniel... we started this with a lie.”

“Then let’s fix it,” he whispered.
He leaned down, and when his lips met hers, there was nothing fake or desperate about it. It was deep, confident, and completely consuming—a kiss that tasted of cedar, rain, and a future neither of them had expected to find.
