Chapter 3 - THE HIGH SOCIETY TRAP

The charity gala at the Piedmont Driving Club was the social event of the season. Chandeliers sparkled like falling stars over politicians, moguls, and high-society elites dressed in diamonds and custom silk.
Ava stood before the floor-length mirror in the private dressing suite of the Han estate, staring at her reflection in absolute disbelief.
The dress Daniel had provided was a masterclass in quiet devastation—a deep emerald silk gown that hugged her curves with flawless precision, paired with diamond-drop earrings that probably cost more than her apartment.
The door opened, and Daniel walked in. He wore a classic tuxedo that fit him with predatory elegance. He paused, his dark eyes sweeping over her from head to toe. For a fraction of a second, the cool, untouchable mafia boss flickered, replaced by raw, undeniable appreciation.
“You look...” Daniel started, clearing his throat slightly. “Adequate, Miss Brooks.”
A faint smile touched Ava’s lips. “Adequate? Is that the best the great Daniel Han can do?”
“Save your ammunition for the ballroom,” Daniel replied smoothly, offering his arm. “Mitchell and Victoria are inside. Let’s go remind them what a real power couple looks like.”
When the grand doors of the ballroom opened and Daniel Han stepped onto the marble floor with Ava Brooks on his arm, the entire room seemed to hold its breath.
Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through high grass. Daniel Han? The Han Organization? Who is the woman with him?
Ava kept her chin up, her posture regal as they glided into the room. She spotted them almost immediately near the champagne tower. Mitchell Carter was standing in a crisp tuxedo, laughing with Victoria Vance, who wore a blinding red dress that looked suspiciously like the one she had worn at the airport.
As Daniel and Ava approached, Mitchell’s laughter died instantly.
His glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor with a sharp crash that silenced the nearby tables.
“Ava?” Mitchell choked out, his face turning the color of curdled milk. “What... what are you doing here?”
Ava turned her head slowly, looking at Mitchell with the cool, absolute indifference one might reserve for a bug on a windshield.
“Hello, Mitchell,” Ava said smoothly, her voice clear and steady. “I don't believe you’ve met my fiancé.”
Daniel stepped forward, sliding his arm around Ava’s waist with an easy, possessive familiarity that made Mitchell look like a frightened schoolboy.
“Daniel Han,” the mafia boss introduced himself, his voice dripping with polite, terrifying menace. “I believe you’re currently trying to secure the downtown commercial rezoning contract through a front company called V&M Holdings. Interesting project. My legal team found several dozen federal violations in your paperwork this morning.”
Victoria Vance turned pale, grabbing Mitchell’s arm. “Mr. Han, there must be some mistake—we are legitimate business—”
“Legitimacy is a very fragile concept, Miss Vance,” Daniel interrupted, his gaze turning glacial. “Just like loyalty. Isn't that right, Mitchell?”

Mitchell looked like he was about to vomit. He looked from Daniel’s terrifying aura to Ava’s stunning, unbreakable composure. He realized, with crushing certainty, that he had traded down for a sinking ship while throwing away an empire.
Before Mitchell could stammer out a defense, a team of federal agents escorted by two of Daniel’s senior enforcers walked straight through the ballroom doors, moving directly toward Mitchell and Victoria with handcuffs ready.
