Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF A CONSPIRACY

The recovery was not instantaneous, but it was miraculous. Within forty-eight hours, Ethan was breathing on his own. Within a week, he was sitting up, eating, and speaking in full sentences.
But for Robert Blackwood, the triumph was shadowed by the realization of what Grace and Lily were hiding.
While Ethan slept, Robert sat in the hospital’s private conference room with Grace. He had brought his top legal team and his most trusted security heads, but he had ordered them to wait outside.
"You didn't just stumble upon this," Robert said, placing a folder of files on the table. "I did some digging—not on you, but on the history of PNDD research. Thirty years ago, there was a secret project funded by a government entity called 'Aegis'. It was shut down after a string of 'accidental' lab fires. The lead researcher was a man named Dr. Elias Walker."
Grace went pale. She looked at the door, then back at Robert. "Elias was my husband. He was Lily’s father."
"They told the world he died in the lab fire," Robert said softly.
"They didn't just kill him, Robert," Grace said, her voice trembling. "They erased him. When he discovered that PNDD was actually a side effect of a synthetic environment-control experiment, the people who funded him realized he had the cure. And they knew if the cure were released, the entire palliative care industry would collapse. They burned the lab to bury the secret. I managed to save his notes, and I raised Lily on the run, using the very formula he died to protect."
Robert felt a cold, hard rage ignite in his chest. He wasn't just a father anymore; he was a billionaire who had spent his life believing in the system, only to realize the system was a blood-soaked lie.
"Who were they, Grace? Who funded Aegis?"
Grace took a breath. "Your own company, Robert. Blackwood Pharmaceuticals bought Aegis twenty years ago. You didn't know because the files were redacted and buried in a shell company, but you are the owner of the organization that destroyed my life."
Robert leaned back, the weight of the realization crushing him. He had been a unwitting beneficiary of the very evil that had nearly killed his son.
"I didn't know," he said, his voice barely a whisper.

"I know you didn't," Grace replied. "That’s why we came to you. You’re the only one who can destroy the structure from the inside."
"I will," Robert promised. "Whatever it takes. I will dismantle everything."
