Chapter 4 - THE RESCUE AT ST. JUDE’S SANATORIUM

The documents inside the safe confirmed everything—every stolen dollar, every forged signature, every suppressed medical claim. But tucked beneath the financial ledgers was a handwritten journal belonging to Margaret Whitlock, dated two months before her death.
In it, his mother had written: “I fear Porter is watching me. I fear Celeste is stealing from the Oak Fund to finance her gambling debts in Atlantic City. If anything happens to me, look to the private sanitarium on the coast of Delaware—the one my family funded in secret. That is where they hide the inconvenient truths.”
Three hours later, Graham’s private jet touched down on a private airstrip outside Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
Accompanied by two state troopers and an emergency medical team, Graham breached the heavy iron gates of St. Jude’s Convalescent Center—an isolated, corporate-funded medical facility listed on paper as an abandoned hospice.
The search was frantic. They tore through administrative wings, unlocked restricted basement wards, and finally found her at the end of a sterile, windowless corridor in Room 412.
Claire Bennett was lying on a narrow metal cot, an IV drip of heavy sedatives pumping into her bruised arm. Her face was deathly pale, her breathing shallow, but her eyes fluttered open as the heavy oak door crashed open against the wall.
“Mr... Mr. Whitlock?” she whispered, her voice a fragile breath.
Graham dropped to his knees beside the cot, gently taking her cold, frail hand in both of his. Tears, hot and unbidden, spilled over his lashes.
“I’m here, Claire,” Graham choked out, his voice thick with emotion. “You’re safe. I read the letter. I found the safe. Porter and Celeste are in federal custody.”
A quiet, profound tear slipped down Claire’s cheek. “Lily... is she...?”
“Lily is sitting in my library right now, eating pancakes with Ruth and playing with her elephant,” Graham promised fiercely, leaning down. “And she is waiting for her mommy to come home.”
The medical team rushed forward, replacing the sedative bag with saline and rushing her gurney out toward the waiting transport chopper.

As the helicopter lifted off into the stormy twilight, carrying Claire toward a premier Manhattan medical center with unlimited funding and top-tier oncologists, Graham looked down from the window at the crashing ocean waves below.
The cold, dead house in Charlotte was gone. The fortress of lies had crumbled.
