Chapter 7 - The Unmasking of the System

While Mrs. Dalton’s termination sent shockwaves through the faculty, the deeper structural rot at Westbridge High was only beginning to be exposed.
Ethan Brooks wasn't finished.
The video of the classroom incident had sparked a digital uprising among the student body. Inspired by Kiara’s resilience and Ethan’s quiet courage, students across all grade levels began coming forward with their own stories of systemic abuse, preferential grading for wealthy donors' children, and administrative cover-ups orchestrated by Principal Henderson.
Late Thursday night, operating from his basement setup, Ethan uploaded a second, massive data package to a newly launched whistleblower portal titled The Westbridge Files.
The new drop contained leaked internal emails between Principal Henderson and wealthy donors—including Chloe Sterling’s father—discussing how to manipulate academic rankings, alter disciplinary records for elite athletes, and systematically weed out scholarship students who didn't fit the demographic profile of the school's ideal corporate image.
By Friday morning, the story had escalated from a local news item into a statewide political scandal.
The state board of education took unprecedented emergency action. By noon, an official decree was broadcast across every media outlet in California: The entire administration of Westbridge High School, including Principal Henderson, was placed on immediate administrative leave pending a sweeping criminal corruption probe.
When students arrived at school on Friday, they were greeted not by familiar security guards or whispering administrators, but by state compliance officers and an interim principal appointed directly by the state superintendent—a respected civil rights educator known for cleaning up corrupt school districts.
The atmosphere in the hallways had fundamentally shifted. The old, suffocating hierarchy—the unwritten caste system where wealthy bullies ruled and vulnerable students were forced to keep their heads down—had been shattered overnight.
As Kiara walked through the front doors of the school that morning, head held high, several students she didn't even know nodded respectfully or offered encouraging smiles.
She spotted Ethan leaning against his locker near the end of the main corridor, casually flipping through a paperback book.
Kiara walked over, stopping beside him. A small, knowing smile played on her lips.
“So,” Kiara said quietly, crossing her arms. “You were the one recording.”
Ethan looked up from his book, closing it slowly. He didn't look defensive; he just offered a calm, steady nod. “Guilty as charged.”
“Why did you do it, Ethan?” Kiara asked, her voice softening. “You didn't even know me that well. You could have gotten expelled. You could have been targeted just like I was.”
Ethan looked down the hallway, watching a group of state auditors reviewing administrative files in the principal’s former office.
“Because I watched them do it to others for two years,” Ethan said quietly, meeting her eyes. “And I realized that staying quiet doesn't keep you safe. It just makes you the next target. Somebody had to hold the mirror up to them so they couldn't pretend they didn't know what they looked like.”

Kiara felt a warm wave of gratitude wash over her chest. She reached out, placing her hand gently on his arm. “Thank you, Ethan. For not looking away.”
Ethan offered a rare, genuine smile. “Always.”
