Chapter 4 - The Digital Match

By midnight that same Tuesday, Ethan’s bedroom looked more like a tactical command center than a teenager's sleeping quarters.

Two large monitors glowed brightly in the darkened room, casting an eerie blue light across stacks of computer components, wiring diagrams, and open coding windows. On the primary screen, the raw video file recorded in Room 204 played on a continuous, sound-muted loop.

Every cruel smirk on Mrs. Dalton’s face, every targeted insult about Kiara’s clothes and background, and every trembling, tear-filled gasp from Kiara was captured in stunning 4K resolution. The audio track had been scrubbed of background noise, amplified, and synchronized with precise timestamps.

Ethan leaned back in his ergonomic chair, his fingers resting lightly on the mechanical keyboard.

He didn't post the video to public social media platforms like TikTok or Instagram. Doing that would cause a temporary wildfire of outrage that the school board could easily dismiss as a biased, out-of-context student prank. It would allow Principal Henderson to issue a slap on the wrist, suspend Ethan for filming without permission, and sweep the entire incident under the rug.

No, Ethan was playing a much larger, more strategic game.

He opened an encrypted, secure communication channel connected directly to the investigative desk of The San Francisco Chronicle’s education and civil rights division, as well as the state department of public education’s ethics compliance portal.

Alongside the raw video file, Ethan attached a meticulously compiled digital dossier containing three years of documented student grievances against Mrs. Dalton—complaints that had been quietly buried by the principal’s office, ignored emails, and signed affidavits from former students who had been driven out of Advanced Placement English due to systematic bullying and discrimination.

Ethan hovered his mouse cursor over the 'SEND' button.

He paused for a fraction of a second, considering the fallout. Once this data packet left his machine, there was no turning back. It would trigger an institutional earthquake that would shake Westbridge High to its foundations. Careers would end. Reputations would shatter. Legal battles would ensue.

Then he flashed back to the image of Kiara standing alone in the center of that classroom, crying while an entire room of bullies and cowards watched in silence.

Ethan clicked SEND.

Ethan let out a long, slow breath, leaning back and closing his eyes. The match had been struck. Now, all he had to do was wait for the fire to reach the powder keg.
