Chapter 3 - THE SHADOWS STRIKE BACK

The article hit the morning papers with the force of an earthquake. It wasn't just a personal story; it was an exposé on domestic surveillance and the systemic failure of protective services.
Within forty-eight hours, Daniel’s life became a battlefield.
His car was rammed by an unmarked sedan on his way home from the office. His personal server was hit by a sophisticated malware attack that leaked his private correspondence—not the illegal kind, but the deeply personal kind that showed he had been funding underground shelters for years, long before he met Sarah.
The public reaction, however, was not what the board expected. Instead of revulsion, there was an outpouring of support. People saw the humanity in his choice. The 'Morrison Effect' took hold, with other CEOs and tech leaders coming forward to announce their own philanthropic initiatives.
But Sarah’s husband was not part of the public. He was a creature of the dark, and he didn't care about headlines.
One evening, as Daniel was leaving his penthouse, he found a note tucked into his windshield. It was handwritten on a piece of hotel stationery from the very station where he had met Sarah.
You shouldn't have played hero, Daniel. You have everything to lose. She has nothing. Let's see who breaks first.
Daniel felt a chill. He contacted the security team he had assigned to Sarah. They were silent.
He didn't wait. He drove to the safe house in the countryside, his heart hammering against his ribs. He had ignored the rules of his own world to save them, and now, he had to make sure they were still there.
When he arrived, the house was dark.
He kicked in the front door, his adrenaline surging. The living room was empty. A single lamp was left on, casting a long shadow across the floor. He found Sarah sitting in the kitchen, her hands trembling, holding a burner phone.
"He found us," she whispered.
"Where's Lily?" Daniel demanded.
"She's safe. I hid her in the crawl space under the floorboards."
May you like
"Where is he?"
"He's outside," Sarah said, pointing to the perimeter of the woods. "He's been circling the house for an hour. He’s waiting for you, Daniel. He knows you’re coming."
