Chapter 4 - THE TRACKING CAPSULE

Detective Miller stared at the screen in absolute disbelief.

“Your son... he switched the bowls?” Miller whispered.

“He heard him,” I breathed, tears finally spilling over my lashes. My brave, brilliant little boy. He had saved our lives by rewriting his father’s murderous geometry.

“That explains why Helen collapsed instead of you and the boy,” Miller muttered, scratching his chin. “Richard’s intended plate—the one laced with the heavy dose of cardiac-suppressant—went straight to his mother because Leo moved it. But wait...”

Miller tapped the tablet, zooming in on the remaining bowl—the one Richard had set aside for himself on the counter, the one that hadn't been poisoned.

“Look at the residue on this plate,” Miller said, pointing to a faint, silvery dust coating the bottom of the ceramic bowl.

Forensics had already run a chemical spectrometer test on the residue. It wasn't poison.

It was a micro-encapsulated military-grade GPS tracking transmitter.

I stared at the screen, my legal compliance background kicking in instantly. “A tracking capsule... Why would Richard put a tracker in his own food plate?”

“He didn't,” a cold, hard voice echoed from the doorway.

It was Detective Miller’s partner, holding a decrypted laptop recovered from Richard’s safe.

“We just cracked your husband’s encrypted messaging app,” the tech officer announced, walking into the kitchen holding a printout of a chat log. “Look at the messages between Richard and the woman he was talking to on the phone—Elena Vance.”

My blood ran cold. Elena Vance.

The name clicked into place like a master lock. Elena Vance was the former chief operating officer of our rival pharmaceutical conglomerate—a woman who had tried to launch a hostile takeover of my family’s trust holdings two years ago and failed miserably after I audited her illegal offshore accounts.

“Read it,” Miller demanded.

The officer read aloud from the printout:

Elena Vance (8:14 PM): “Did you prep the plates? Remember, the asset must be eliminated precisely according to the corporate trust schedule, or the offshore merger falls through. And don't forget to swallow the tracker capsule before you eat your portion. The satellite relay needs to confirm your biological vitals are active at the moment of the inheritance transfer so the Cayman bank verifies you as the sole surviving trustee.”

Richard Harper (8:18 PM): “Done. The food is served. Once they are gone, I swallow the capsule, the beacon pings Zurich, and the billions are ours.”

The entire kitchen went dead silent.

Richard hadn't just been murdering his family for money. He had been acting as a pawn in a larger corporate conspiracy orchestrated by Elena Vance, who had promised him control of the empire—provided he survived the 'tragedy' long enough to sign the final transfer papers. And to prove he was the sole survivor, he had to ingest a GPS-enabled biological tracking capsule that would transmit his live vitals to her offshore server the second we were dead.

“He swallowed it,” I whispered, staring at the screen in horror. “Before dinner... he took his own tracking capsule.”

Detective Miller’s eyes lit up with predatory focus. He grabbed his radio.

“All units, this is Sergeant Miller. We have an active suspect in custody, but we just tracked the primary conspirator’s digital uplink. The tracking capsule in Richard Harper’s system is broadcasting an active ping right now.”

Miller looked at me, his expression grim and resolute.

“Mrs. Harper, your husband’s tracker isn't just sending data to a server in Zurich. It’s transmitting a live GPS coordinate to a receiver within a five-mile radius.”

Miller turned to his tactical team.

“Get the digital forensics van rolling. Follow that signal. It leads directly to the woman who ordered an entire family eliminated.”
