Chapter 3 - THE TOP FLOOR SANCTUARY

An hour after the dinner rush finally bled into a manageable evening lull, Lena walked out of the locker room holding Ellie tightly against her shoulder. Her mind was still spinning. Had she hallucinated the entire interaction in the downstairs office? Was this some elaborate psychological torture designed to break her before firing her?

She stepped into the elevator, pressing the button for the fifth floor—a button that had previously required a biometric security clearance she didn't possess. The keycard in her pocket, handed to her by one of Dante’s personal guards ten minutes earlier with strict instructions, clicked softly against the metal panel.

The doors slid open, revealing a space that completely defied her expectations of a mafia stronghold.

Instead of cold concrete or interrogation rooms, the fifth floor was a warm, brightly lit, beautifully appointed apartment suite. Soft pastel walls, a plush cream-colored carpet, rows of cribs, high-end baby monitors, and an array of educational toys filled the room. Sitting on a comfortable armchair in the corner was an elderly, kind-faced woman in a soft knit sweater.

“You must be Lena,” the woman said warmly, standing up and wiping her hands on a cloth. “I’m Martha. Mr. Vance called ahead. Welcome.”

Lena stepped inside, her eyes wide with shock. “I... I don't understand. Is this real?”

“Very real, dear,” Martha chuckled, walking over and gently taking Ellie, who cooed happily at the new face. “Dante called me an hour ago, told me to clear out the old storage archives on this floor, and bring up all the childcare equipment from his sister’s estate. He said a mother shouldn't have to choose between feeding her child and keeping her job under his roof.”

Lena felt a lump form in her throat. The man the entire city feared—the man rumored to crush rivals without blinking—had just spent his own evening converting a high-security floor into a private nursery just because her daughter had fallen asleep on his chest.

Over the next few weeks, life at The Obsidian transformed completely for Lena.

The constant, crushing terror of balancing motherhood and poverty lifted. Ellie spent her afternoons in the fifth-floor sanctuary under Martha’s loving care, while Lena worked her shifts with a renewed sense of security. Occasionally, during quiet afternoons, she would see Dante passing through the hallways. He never said much—just a brief nod, a subtle acknowledgment between two people who shared a secret. But Ellie had other plans.

Whenever the little girl saw Dante’s tall, dark silhouette walking past the glass doors of the dining room, she would squeal and reach out her arms. And, to the shock of every manager and security guard in the building, the feared mafia boss would routinely stop, walk over, and lift the baby into his arms, carrying her around the lobby for a few minutes while she tugged fearlessly at his expensive ties.

Word spread quietly among the staff: The boss has a soft spot. But none of them knew the whole story.
