Chapter 1 - THE FORBIDDEN DOORWAY

The gray dawn of Lake City pressed against the grimy alleyway windows, offering no warmth to Lena Vance. Seven months had passed since a sudden traffic accident stole her husband, Mark, leaving her to navigate an unyielding world alone. Every morning felt like a rigged test she could not afford to fail.

At 6:30 AM, her babysitter texted a frantic apology: a high fever had left her bedridden. Panic clawed at Lena’s chest. Her neighbor ignored her desperate calls, and the only licensed daycare with a morning vacancy demanded a steep registration fee she simply did not possess. Her shift at The Obsidian, the city’s most exclusive restaurant, started in less than two hours. Missing work meant losing her job. Losing her job meant eviction from their modest apartment within days.

Driven by desperation, Lena packed Ellie’s feeding bottles, a soft pink blanket, a few diapers, and a yellow rattle. Carrying her seven-month-old daughter through the restaurant’s service entrance, her heart slammed against her ribs like a trapped bird.

The Obsidian belonged to Dante Vance—no relation to her struggles, but a man whispered about with absolute terror. Employees lowered their voices when his name surfaced, and veteran managers altered multi-thousand-dollar decisions the moment his obsidian-black town car pulled up to the curb. More importantly, the restaurant operated under an absolute, unquestioned commandment: Never go near the private office downstairs.

Desperate for a safe hiding spot, Lena slipped into a quiet supply alcove near the dry storage shelves. She spread a clean linen tablecloth on the floor, layering Ellie’s blanket into a makeshift nest.

“Please be good for Mommy,” Lena whispered, pressing her forehead against her daughter’s soft curls. “Just a few hours. I’ll check on you every chance I get.”

Ellie stared up with calm, wide eyes, her tiny fingers tightly gripping the edge of the blanket.

For the first hour, everything went smoothly. Lena slipped away twice during prep work, finding her daughter safe, quiet, and chewing happily on her pacifier. But as the clock ticked toward 5:00 PM, the dreaded dinner rush hit like a tidal wave. Orders screamed from the kitchen printers, trays rattled, and customers packed the dining room.

At 5:10, Lena managed a frantic, breathless break to check the supply closet.

The blanket was still there.

The yellow rattle lay abandoned on the linen.

Ellie was gone.

A freezing wave of terror paralyzed Lena’s lungs. She forced herself not to scream, knowing that discovering an infant hidden in the restaurant would result in instant termination without a word of explanation. She darted through the kitchen, searched beneath metal prep counters, and flipped through storage boxes while pretending to collect extra napkins.

Nothing.

Then, her eyes locked onto the heavy oak door leading to the downstairs level. It stood ajar by a fraction of an inch—an impossibility, given that no employee would ever dare touch it.

Lena moved toward it instinctively.

“Lena.”

The harsh voice of her shift manager froze her blood. He stood at the end of the narrow corridor, his expression carved from stone. “Where do you think you’re going?”

“I... I thought I heard something down there,” she stammered, panic leaking into her tone.

His eyes narrowed dangerously. “Walk away. Now back to your station.”

Before she could answer, a faint, unmistakable sound cut through the silence of the corridor.

A soft, muffled cry.

Ellie.

Without a second thought, Lena shoved past the manager and bolted down the stairwell. He shouted threats behind her, but she did not stop. She reached the bottom of the stairs, slammed her weight against the private office door, and threw it open.

Inside, time seemed to stop entirely.

Dante Vance—the city’s most feared, ruthless underworld figure—was stretched across a deep leather couch, fast asleep.

And resting peacefully against his broad chest, sound asleep beneath the rise and fall of his breathing, was Ellie.

One of Dante’s heavy, tattooed hands rested protectively over her back.

Then, those cold, dangerous eyes slowly opened.
