Chapter 5 - The Road Back to Nashville

The private charter flight back to Nashville hummed quietly through the predawn darkness.
Rowan sat in the leather cabin seat, staring out the window at the distant, glittering stars above the clouds. The adrenaline that had sustained him through the raid in Atlanta had finally faded, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion—but mixed with that exhaustion was something he hadn't felt in years: absolute, unalloyed peace.
His phone buzzed on the small mahogany table beside him.
It was a text message from Marcus: ‘Federal prosecutors have locked her in holding with zero bond options. The insurance policies have been officially voided, and her assets are frozen pending civil forfeiture. She’s never seeing the light of day again, buddy.’
Rowan typed a brief, heartfelt reply: ‘Thank you, Marcus. For everything.’
He locked his phone and closed his eyes. His thoughts drifted entirely back to Nashville—back to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, where two little kids were sleeping safely in a warm room, waiting for their dad to come back.
When the jet touched down at Nashville International Airport just after sunrise, Rowan didn't waste a single second. He grabbed his coat, hopped into his waiting SUV, and drove straight to the hospital.
The morning light was streaming brightly through the second-floor windows of the pediatric intensive care unit when Rowan pushed open the door to Room 212.
Dr. Jenkins stood beside the bed, checking a chart, while a nurse was helping adjust Elsie’s pillows.
And there, sitting up in the hospital bed with a bowl of warm oatmeal and fresh strawberries in front of him, was Micah. Beside him, propped up against a pile of fluffy white hospital pillows, sat four-year-old Elsie.
She looked pale, and her voice was still a little raspy, but her big brown eyes were bright, clear, and fully awake.
When Elsie looked up and saw Rowan walking through the doorway, her small face lit up with a pure, unadulterated smile that instantly healed every broken piece of Rowan’s heart.
“Daddy!” Elsie cried out weakly, stretching her tiny arms out toward him.
Rowan broke into a run, dropping to his knees beside the hospital bed and burying his face gently against her shoulder, sobbing tears of absolute relief.
“I’m here, baby girl. Daddy is right here,” Rowan choked out, wrapping his arms around both Micah and Elsie, pulling them both into a massive, unbreakable embrace. “I’m never, ever leaving you again.”
Micah leaned his head against Rowan’s shoulder, smiling brightly as he shoved a spoonful of strawberries into his mouth. “Daddy, the nurse said we get to go home soon! And we have a whole kitchen full of groceries waiting for us, right?”
Rowan pulled back, looked into his children’s bright, safe eyes, and smiled a genuine, radiant smile for the first time in what felt like a lifetime.

“The biggest kitchen, buddy,” Rowan promised, kissing the top of Micah’s head and holding Elsie’s tiny hand in his own. “And we are going to fill every single cabinet with all your favorite things.”
The storm had finally passed. The monsters had been swept away by the unyielding force of a father’s love and a relentless pursuit of justice. Ahead of them lay a bright, open horizon—a brand-new life built on safety, laughter, and an unbreakable family bond that nothing in this world could ever break again.
