Chapter 3 - The Ghost Trail

By Thursday morning, the pediatric intensive care unit had become a fortress of quiet desperation and high-tech medical monitoring.

Elsie’s fever had finally broken overnight, dropping back into a safe range, but she remained fast asleep, resting under the watchful eyes of Dr. Jenkins and her specialized nursing staff. Micah had finally fallen into a deep, exhausted sleep on a pull-out cot in the corner of the room, clutching his stuffed animal tightly against his chest.

Rowan sat in a hard plastic chair beside Elsie’s bed, his eyes bloodshot, watching every flicker of the heart monitor. He hadn't slept a wink. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Micah’s hollow cheeks and heard the terrifying rattle of Elsie’s shallow breath in that dark, rotting house.

His phone buzzed sharply on the bedside table.

Rowan snatched it up instantly. It was a secure text message from Marcus containing a location pin and three encrypted PDF documents.

A moment later, Marcus’s call came through. Rowan answered on the first ring, stepping quietly out into the hallway.

“Talk to me, Marcus. Did you find her?”

“Better than that, Rowan,” Marcus replied, his voice laced with grim satisfaction. “I didn't just find her location; I found out why she was in such a desperate rush to dump the kids and vanish.”

“Explain,” Rowan demanded, leaning his shoulder against the hospital wall.

“For the past six months, Delaney hasn’t just been living a normal life. She’s been living way beyond her means—high-end boutiques, luxury downtown condos under fake LLCs, private weekend trips to Miami, and massive gambling debts racked up at underground private poker clubs,” Marcus explained, flipping through digital files on his end. “She was drowning in over four hundred thousand dollars of unsecured debt, and her creditors were about to garnish her bank accounts and seize her assets.”

Rowan frowned, rubbing his temples. “Delaney always loved luxury, but how did she get four hundred thousand in debt? My child support payments were more than generous, and she received a substantial monthly settlement when we divorced.”

“She burned through your settlement in less than a year on high-stakes gambling and a personal trainer turned sugar-baby boyfriend named Leo Vance—no relation to me, thankfully,” Marcus snorted darkly. “When the money ran out and the creditors threatened exposure, she realized that having two toddlers around was a massive financial and social liability. She needed cash, fast. And she figured out a way to get it.”

A cold dread crept up the back of Rowan’s neck. “What way?”

“Life insurance policies,” Marcus said flatly.

Rowan stopped breathing. “What?”

“Two months ago, right before she asked for extended custody claiming she wanted to ‘bond with the kids at the lake,’ Delaney quietly took out high-value accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies on both Micah and Elsie, naming herself as the sole, 100% beneficiary,” Marcus revealed, each word landing like a physical blow. “Payout value: two million dollars total.”

The hallway seemed to tilt sideways. Rowan gripped the edge of the nurses’ station, his vision blurring with a blinding wave of murderous rage.

She hadn't just abandoned them. She had planned to let them starve, dehydrate, or succumb to illness in that locked house, waiting for the inevitable tragedy so she could collect a two-million-dollar payout to wipe out her gambling debts and fund her glamorous lifestyle with her lover.

It wasn't just neglect. It was calculated, premeditated filicide.

“Where is she right now?” Rowan asked, his voice shaking with a terrifying, frozen fury.

“She’s not in Nashville anymore,” Marcus said smoothly. “My cyber-team tracked her credit card usage and cell phone ping to a luxury penthouse suite at the Grand Hotel in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. She’s currently booked under an alias—‘Elena Vance’—and she’s scheduled to meet with an offshore wealth manager tomorrow afternoon to initiate the paperwork for transferring overseas funds.”

“An alias,” Rowan muttered bitterly. “She thinks she’s untouchable.”

“Well, she’s about to get a very rude awakening,” Marcus chuckled darkly. “I’ve already contacted my contacts in the Atlanta Police Department’s financial crimes and major cases division, along with federal marshals stationed in Georgia. The moment we have local jurisdiction sign off on the arrest warrant for child endangerment, abandonment, and attempted fraud, they’re going to kick her penthouse door right off its hinges.”

“I want to be there,” Rowan said instantly.

“Rowan, you need to stay with your kids in Nashville—,” Marcus started to protest.

“No, Marcus,” Rowan interrupted, his tone leaving absolutely zero room for argument. “I am not sitting in a hospital waiting room while the monster who tried to murder my children sits in a luxury hotel suite sipping champagne. Book me a private flight to Atlanta. I’m flying out in two hours.”
