Chapter 3 - THE BABY HE WANTED TO OWN

Two weeks later, the spring storm had cleared, leaving Boston washed in a crisp, bright April sun.

In a sunlit recovery suite on the VIP floor of St. Catherine’s Medical Center—guarded by two of Dr. Mercer’s private security guards—Olivia Bennett held her newborn daughter in her arms.

Baby Maya slept peacefully against her chest, wrapped in a soft yellow blanket, breathing with the steady, perfect rhythm of new life.

The door opened softly, and Elliot Mercer walked in carrying a small bouquet of white tulips. He smiled warmly, walking over to the bed to gently stroke the baby’s tiny, perfect hand.

“She has your eyes, Liv,” Elliot whispered.

“And your stubborn streak, I hope,” Olivia smiled, looking down at her daughter with a fierce, protective love that made her chest ache.

A sharp knock echoed at the door.

Before either of them could answer, the handle turned, and Preston Harlan pushed his way into the room. He looked terrible. His suit was wrinkled, his hair uncombed, his eyes dark with days of sleepless panic. The board had stripped him of his CEO title forty-eight hours ago, and federal investigators had already subpoenaed his personal bank accounts.

He stopped at the foot of the bed, staring at the baby with a desperate, frantic hunger.

“Olivia,” Preston breathed, taking a step forward. “Please. You have to listen to me. The board... they ruined me. They took my company. But we’re still married. We can fix this. We can raise our daughter together.”

Olivia didn't flinch. She adjusted her grip on Maya, her gaze locking onto Preston with chilling calm.

“You don't want a daughter, Preston,” Olivia said, her voice steady and low. “You want an accessory. You want an heir to put on a pedestal when it benefits your image, and lock away when it’s inconvenient. Just like you did with me.”

“That’s not true!” Preston protested, his voice cracking as he reached out toward the crib. “I’m her father! I have rights! I’ll sue for custody—I’ll spend every last cent I have to tear you apart in family court!”

“Go ahead,” a deep, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway.

Elliot Mercer stepped between Preston and the bed, squaring his broad shoulders. He pulled a thick stack of legal documents from his briefcase and dropped them onto the rolling table beside Preston.

“What is this?” Preston demanded, his hands shaking as he picked up the papers.

“That,” Elliot said coldly, “is an absolute, irrevocable relinquishment of parental rights, signed by your own negligence, backed by federal fraud indictments, and sealed by a family court judge this morning. You are legally, financially, and permanently severed from any claim to my niece or her child.”

Preston flipped through the pages, his eyes widening in horror as he read the clauses. Without the Harlan fortune, without his corporate standing, and with a federal grand jury investigating his financial misconduct, he had no leverage left. The empire he had used to terrorize and control his wife had completely vanished.

“You can’t do this,” Preston whispered, looking up with tears of pure frustration pooling in his eyes. “I’m a Harlan.”

“You were a bully with a checkbook,” Olivia corrected quietly, looking down at her daughter. “And now, you’re nothing.”

Elliot motioned toward the door. Two security guards stepped inside, flanking Preston on either side.

“Mr. Harlan,” Elliot said, his voice flat and unforgiving. “Visiting hours are over. Get out of my hospital.”

May you like

Preston opened his mouth to argue, but looking at the guards, looking at Elliot’s stone-cold expression, and finally looking at Olivia—who didn't even bother to watch him leave—he realized the game was over.

He turned and walked out of the room, his head bowed, swallowed by the empty hallway he had once walked with such arrogant pride.
