Chapter 2 - THE DISMANTLING OF AN EMPIRE

By midnight, the offices of Harlan Enterprises looked like a war room after a catastrophic defeat.

Preston sat at his mahogany desk on the forty-second floor, a half-empty glass of scotch in his hand, watching the city lights smear through the rain-streaked glass. His phone buzzed continuously on the polished wood—texts from panicked board members, emails from nervous PR consultants, and urgent voicemails from his chief legal counsel warning him that federal investigators were sniffing around the Harlan Family Foundation's recent real estate acquisitions.

The trap had closed faster than he could calculate.

Dr. Elliot Mercer hadn't just made an empty threat. Within two hours of the hospital incident, St. Catherine’s legal team had filed an emergency injunction freezing all joint foundation assets tied to Olivia’s former nonprofit, legally blocking Preston from liquidating or moving funds. Simultaneously, public relations firms across Boston dropped the Harlan account like a radioactive isotope after video footage of Cassandra’s red heel striking a pregnant woman went viral on social media.

The door to the private office clicked open.

Vincent Vance, Preston’s senior legal counsel, walked in, looking pale and thoroughly exhausted. He dropped a thick manila folder onto the glass coffee table.

“It’s worse than we thought, Mr. Harlan,” Vincent said, wiping sweat from his forehead. “Dr. Mercer’s legal team didn't just target the foundation assets. They’ve systematically revoked every commercial lease we held in the medical district. And the board... three of our major institutional investors just called an emergency meeting for 8:00 AM. They want your resignation.”

Preston slammed his glass down, the scotch splashing over the rim. “Resignation?! I built this company! My grandfather founded this firm! They can’t force me out over a domestic dispute!”

“It’s not a domestic dispute anymore, Preston,” Vincent said quietly, looking him straight in the eye. “It’s corporate embezzlement and fraud. When Olivia folded her legal aid nonprofit into the foundation three years ago, she didn't just hand over her assets—she retained an equity audit clause that you signed without reading. Every penny you diverted from that fund to finance Cassandra’s apartments in Back Bay is documented in triplicate.”

Preston’s breath caught in his throat. “She planned this.”

“She didn't plan for you to cheat on her, Mr. Harlan,” Vincent replied dryly. “She just prepared for the day you tried to destroy her. And right now, she’s holding the match.”
