Chapter 4 - THE BREAKING POINT

The crisis escalated three nights later. A rival family, testing Dominic’s absolute dominance, made a reckless move—they targeted the perimeter of his estate. Gunfire echoed across the Long Island lawns at midnight. Alarms shrieked through the halls, and armed guards scrambled to secure the mansion.
Bea woke up to the sound of breaking glass and chaos. She ran down the corridor toward Leo’s nursery to protect the boy, only to find Dominic already there, sweeping Leo into his arms.
When Dominic saw Bea standing in the doorway in her oversized sleep shirt, wide-eyed and trembling, a dark flash of raw terror crossed his features—not for himself, but for her.
“Get down!” he shouted, shoving both of them behind a reinforced oak pillar just as a stray bullet shattered the nursery window, embedding itself into the plaster wall.
“Is Leo okay?” Bea gasped, throwing her arms around the terrified boy while pressing her body against them both to shield them.
Dominic looked down at her, seeing a frightened maid willing to sacrifice her life for his son. The last barrier holding back his restraint shattered entirely. Once the gunfire ceased and his elite security detail neutralized the threat outside, Dominic ordered the guards to sweep the perimeter and locked the nursery door.
He looked at Bea, his breathing heavy, his knuckles still raw.
“You could have been killed,” he ground out, his voice thick with suppressed fury.
“Leo needed—”
“I wasn't talking about Leo!” Dominic cut her off, stepping closer until she was trapped against the wall. “I’m talking about you, Beatrice. Why were you out of your room? Why do you always risk yourself like you don't matter?”
Tears of delayed shock pricked her eyes. “Because in this house, people like me don't matter! To you, I’m just the maid who keeps things clean!”
Dominic grabbed her shoulders, his grip firm but careful, his dark eyes burning into hers with fierce intensity. “Is that really what you think after all these weeks? You think you’re invisible to me?”

Before she could speak, his head lowered, and his lips captured hers.
The kiss wasn't gentle; it was desperate, hungry, and heavy with months of unspoken obsession and restraint. Bea gasped softly, her hands instinctively clutching the lapels of his shirt as the walls she had built around her heart completely crumbled away.
