Chapter 7 - The Interrogation and the Dominoes

Upstairs in the grand salon, the illusion of the Sterling dynasty had completely shattered into dust.
Adrian sat handcuffed to a bolted metal chair in the center of the room, his expensive charcoal suit wrinkled and stained, his arrogant posture completely collapsed. Across from him, Detective Vance dropped a heavy manila folder onto the metal interrogation table with a resounding smack.
“You’re looking at felony domestic assault, aggravated battery, and now, based on the physical evidence and witness testimony recovered from the basement vault, accessory to manslaughter and evidence tampering,” Vance said, leaning over the table.
Adrian’s eyes darted frantically around the room. He spotted his father sitting ten feet away, equally cuffed. “Dad... tell them something. Call our legal team. Get me out of here!”
Charles didn't look up. He stared blankly at his own polished shoes, realizing that his lifetime of political bribes, corporate payoffs, and purchased influence couldn't save them from federal and state felonies. The digital hard drives recovered from the vault contained encrypted financial transfers, hush-money receipts, and corrupt medical examiner reports dating back over a decade.
The dominoes were falling faster than the family could catch them. Within hours of the raid, the county prosecutor’s office issued emergency arrest warrants for Charles and Eleanor for conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and tampering with a deceased person’s remains.
Eleanor wept hysterically as female deputies placed cold steel handcuffs around her wrists, her designer pearl necklace snapping and scattering pearls across the foyer floor like teardrops.
“You can’t do this to us!” Eleanor shrieked, thrashing against the officers as they led her toward the waiting squad car. “We built this county! We made this city what it is!”
“You built it on lies and broken lives, Mrs. Sterling,” Officer Miller replied flatly, guiding her out the door.
Outside, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the front gates of the estate, drawing a crowd of local reporters, photographers, and curious onlookers who had caught wind of the high-profile police raid. Microphones flashed and camera shutters clicked relentlessly as the once-untouchable patriarch and matriarch of the Sterling family were bundled into separate police cruisers in handcuffs.
Clara stood on the front portico, watching the patrol cars disappear down the winding vineyard road. The cold night wind ruffled her hair, but she didn't feel cold. For the first time since she had walked into Briarwood Lane years ago, the heavy weight pressing down on her chest was completely gone.
Julian’s car pulled up rapidly behind the cruiser blockade. He threw open the door, leaped out, and hurried up the stone steps, his face pale with panic.
“Clara!” Julian called out, rushing toward her and pulling her into his arms, holding her tightly as if afraid she might vanish. “I saw the news alerts on my phone. Are you okay? The reports said there was an ambulance—”
“I’m okay, Julian,” Clara murmured against his shoulder, breathing in the familiar, comforting scent of his cologne. She pulled back slightly, offering a genuine, reassuring smile. “I’m more than okay. It’s finally over.”

Julian cupped her face gently with his hands, his thumb lightly brushing the clean white bandage on her temple. His eyes burned with fierce protectiveness and profound relief. “When I heard what happened... I’ve never been so terrified in my life. We’re leaving this place tonight. Pack your bags; you’re staying at my loft.”
“I am,” Clara nodded. “Let’s go home.”
