Chapter 4 - The Secrets Beneath the House

The heavy oak front door of the Sterling estate shuddered under a series of heavy, authoritative knocks, followed instantly by the sharp, metallic jingle of police duty belts.

“Police department! Open the door!” a deep, commanding voice echoed through the foyer.

Charles moved toward the hallway as if frozen in time, his usual commanding presence entirely dissolved into the shuffling gait of an old man facing ruin. Before he could reach the heavy brass handle, the door was pushed open from the outside by two uniformed Napa County sheriff’s deputies, their hands resting cautiously near the holsters of their sidearms.

“Step back! Stay right where you are! Keep your hands where we can see them!” Officer Miller, a seasoned deputy with sharp eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor, barked the commands as he swept his gaze across the chaotic scene in the dining room.

His eyes landed immediately on Claire—sitting upright at the table, a white napkin pressed against her bleeding temple, dark crimson staining her hair and the pristine tablecloth—and then shifted instantly to Adrian, whose hands were raised defensively near the table.

“Ma’am, are you the caller?” Officer Miller asked, stepping quickly across the threshold, his boots crunching on the scattered fragments of broken porcelain.

“Yes,” Claire answered clearly, her voice cutting through the tension. “My name is Claire Sterling. That man, my husband Adrian Sterling, assaulted me without provocation, striking me in the head with a ceramic dinner plate.”

Officer Miller signaled to his partner, who immediately moved in, grabbing Adrian by the arm and spinning him around against the mahogany sideboard with practiced efficiency.

Click.

Cold steel handcuffs snapped securely around Adrian’s wrists.

“Adrian Sterling, you are under arrest for felony domestic assault and battery,” the second deputy announced, reading off the Miranda warnings while Adrian thrashed uselessly against the grip.

“This is an outrage!” Charles shouted, stepping forward with his chest puffed out, reverting instinctively to his old tactics. “Do you have any idea who I am? I am Charles Sterling! I sit on the county board of development! You cannot barge into my home and arrest my son over a minor domestic disagreement!”

Officer Miller didn't even blink. He looked at Charles with absolute contempt.

“Step back, sir, or you’ll be joining him in the back of the cruiser for obstruction of justice,” Officer Miller warned coldly, before turning his attention back to Claire. “Ma’am, the paramedics are right behind us. They’re coming in now.”

True to his word, the heavy front door swung open again, and two paramedics rushed into the dining room carrying medical bags, a trauma kit, and a portable neck brace.

As the paramedics gently guided Claire away from the ruined table to examine her head wound, cleaning away the dried blood and checking her vitals for concussion symptoms, the chaotic energy in the room reached a fever pitch.

Eleanor was shaking uncontrollably, her aristocratic composure completely shattered. She glared at Maya with venomous, burning hatred.

“You did this,” Eleanor hissed, stepping menacingly toward her daughter-in-law. “You traitorous little ungrateful cow! You brought this down on our family!”

Maya didn't cower. She stood her ground, her chin raised, breathing heavily. For years, she had carried the weight of a secret she was too terrified to share, suffocating under the thumb of the Sterling dynasty. But watching Claire stand up to Adrian—watching blood spill on that table—had broken the spell.

“I didn't do anything,” Maya said clearly, her voice ringing out across the room. “He did it to himself.”

Officer Miller, overhearing the exchange while taking preliminary notes, turned his sharp gaze toward Maya. He noticed the intense hostility radiating from Eleanor and Charles, and the way Maya’s hands were trembling as she clutched her arms.

“Hold on,” Officer Miller said, stepping toward them. “Ma’am, did you witness the assault?”

“I saw all of it,” Maya said, her voice dropping into a steady, resolute register. “He hit her. He swung the plate right at her head. And his parents sat there watching, waiting for her to stop moving.”

“Wait a minute, Officer,” Charles interjected, his voice tight with desperation as he tried to regain control of the narrative. “She’s disgruntled. She has personal grievances against this family—!”

“Shut up, Mr. Sterling,” Officer Miller ordered flatly. He looked back at Maya. “Is there anything else you need to tell me? Because obstruction or withholding information in a felony assault investigation is a serious offense.”

Maya swallowed hard. She looked across the room at Claire, who was sitting on a dining chair with a sterile gauze bandage taped to her temple, watching intently.

Maya took a deep, trembling breath.

“Before you take him away,” Maya said softly, “you need to check the basement.”

May you like

Officer Miller frowned, his professional instincts instantly locking onto the shift in tone. “The basement? What’s in the basement, ma’am?”

“Evidence,” Maya whispered, her eyes filling with tears. “Not just of what happened tonight. Of what happened five years ago. To the woman before Claire.”
