Chapter 4 - THE RECKONING AT DAWN

The sun rose over Boston like a bruised eye, casting a pale, sickly light across the frozen harbor.
Inside the grand dining room of the Cross Estate, a fire crackled in the hearth, but it did little to warm the room.
Paige Harrington sat at the end of the long mahogany table, nervously sipping black coffee. Across from her sat Victor Slade, his expression unreadable as always. Standing near the French doors, looking pale and battered with a thick bandage wrapped around his ribs, was Griffin.
The double doors swung open.
Ezra walked in. He was dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, his shoulders squared, his gray eyes shining with the cold, absolute authority of a man preparing to execute judgment.
He didn't sit down. He walked straight to the head of the table and planted both hands on the polished wood.
"I called this breakfast early," Ezra said, his voice cutting through the silence like a razor, "because I hate unfinished business. And yesterday’s board meeting left a lot of loose ends."
Paige dropped her spoon against her china saucer with a sharp clatter. Her face was chalk-white. "Ezra... Griffin told us what happened last night. We are so sorry if we overstepped—"
"Save it, Paige," Ezra interrupted, his voice flat and merciless. "You didn't overstep. You accelerated your timeline. You thought the king was dead, so you and Griffin started dividing the treasury."
"That's not true!" Griffin snarled, stepping forward defensively before wincing in pain as his bruised ribs protested. "You abandoned us! You faked your death and left us to deal with the board, the rivals, the feds! What did you expect us to do?"
"I expected you to mourn," Ezra said coldly. "Instead, you started looting my house. And speaking of looting..."
Ezra turned his cold gaze toward Paige.
"...tell me, Paige, what were you looking for in Nadia’s studio on the third floor last night?"
Paige froze. Her breath hitched in her throat, her eyes darting frantically toward the door. "I... I don't know what you're talking about! Nadia was my cousin! I was just looking for photographs of her—memories for Rosie!"
"My wife’s personal financial ledgers from before her marriage are not family photographs, Paige," Ezra said, stepping slowly around the table toward her. "Neither are her private letters to her attorney detailing the suspicious transfer of her personal shipping stocks into a secondary account controlled by... let me check my notes... controlled by Victor Slade."
Victor didn't blink. He calmly set his teacup down on the table, leaning back in his chair.
"It seems you've been very thorough, Boss," Victor said, his voice entirely devoid of panic.
"More thorough than you thought, Victor," Ezra replied, stopping two feet away from Paige, who was now trembling so violently she couldn't hold her coffee cup. "My father trusted you. He believed you were the anchor of this family. But you weren't an anchor. You were the anchor chain dragging us down. You helped Nadia’s cousin siphon her pre-marriage assets, and when Nadia started asking questions about where her father’s shipping lines went... you cut her brakes."
Paige let out a choked scream, burying her face in her hands. "I didn't want to kill her! I swear I didn't! Victor said she was going to expose us! He said if Nadia divorced Ezra and took her shares, our entire syndicate would collapse!"
The confession hung in the grand dining room like a foul odor.
Griffin stared at Paige in absolute horror, realizing for the first time that his greed had made him a pawn in a much darker, bloodnier game.
Victor Slade sighed softly. He slowly stood up, smoothing the lapels of his immaculate suit jacket. He didn't look like a trapped animal; he looked like a man who had expected this conversation for a very long time.
"Nadia was too soft for this world, Ezra," Victor said, his voice frighteningly calm. "She wanted to walk away from the syndicate, take her fortune, and live a normal life. If she had left, the federal government would have had a direct pipeline into our financial records through her family trusts. I did what was necessary to protect the Cross family."
"You didn't protect the family, Victor," Ezra said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "You destroyed it."
Ezra lifted his right hand—a single small gesture.
The double doors of the dining room flew open. Four armed security operatives stepped inside, their weapons leveled directly at Victor Slade.
Victor didn't resist. He raised his hands slowly, a faint, weary smile touching his lips. "You always were your father’s son, Ezra. Ruthless to the core. But remember... once you clean out the old guard, you'll be standing entirely alone."

"I'm not alone," Ezra said, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable finality.
He looked past the guards, past the traitors who had tried to steal his empire, toward the doorway where Willa stood holding little Rosie’s hand, watching the dawn break over Boston.
