Chapter 2 - THE COLD HEARTH OF BEACON HILL

The black town car slid silently through the wrought-iron gates of the Cross Estate just past midnight. The snow was falling thicker now, blanketing the ancient oaks and turning the Beacon Hill property into a ghost-town tableau of white and shadow.

Ezra didn't use the front entrance. He walked around to the side garden, his boots crunching softly on the frozen crust.

Inside the mansion, the grand hallway was dim, illuminated only by the faint amber glow of emergency wall sconces. For years, this house had echoed with the laughter of Nadia, and later, with the bright, running footsteps of little Rosie. But tonight, the air felt thin, heavy, and wrong.

He didn't hear the television. He didn't hear Willa singing a bedtime lullaby.

Instead, coming from the direction of the east wing sitting room, he heard raised voices. Harsh, angry whispers.

Ezra moved like a shadow down the carpeted corridor, stopping just outside the half-open door of the sitting room.

Inside, Griffin stood by the fireplace, his coat still on, his face twisted in an ugly snarl. Facing him was Willa Sinclair, her Auburn hair messy, her pale green eyes flashing with a fierce, protective fire that Ezra had never seen in her before. Clutched tightly behind Willa’s skirt was five-year-old Rosie, her face buried in the nanny's clothes, sobbing quietly.

"You can't keep hiding her in the nursery, Willa," Griffin hissed, stepping forward. "My brother is back, yes, but he's going to be busy cleaning up the mess at the tower for days. Now hand over the key to the master safe. Nadia left specific jewelry allocations for her cousin Paige, and I want them before Ezra starts locking down the estate again."

"I don't have the keys, Griffin," Willa said, her voice shaking slightly but holding its ground. "And even if I did, I wouldn't give them to you. You have no right to steal from this house while Ezra is barely back through the door."

"Steal?" Griffin let out a harsh, bitter laugh, stepping closer until Willa was forced to back up against the sofa, pulling Rosie with her. "Everything in this house belongs to the Cross family now. Ezra is a tyrant, but he's a distracted one tonight. When I'm done stripping these accounts, you won't even have a job here. Do you really think a low-class nanny from a broken family is going to protect this little brat once I take over?"

"She is not a brat!" Willa snapped, her voice rising sharply.

Rosie let out a terrified wail, her tiny fingers gripping Willa’s coat so hard her knuckles turned white. "Willa... I want my daddy. I want my daddy back!"

Griffin sneered, raising his hand impatiently. "Shut her up, or I swear I'll—"

He didn't finish the threat.

The heavy oak door of the sitting room didn't just open; it exploded inward, crashing against the interior wall with a sound like a gunshot.

Griffin spun around, his face draining of all color in a microsecond.

Ezra Cross stood in the doorway.

The coat he wore was dusted with fresh snow. His face was carved from absolute, terrifying ice. His gray eyes locked onto Griffin with the merciless, hollow focus of a predator that had just found a wolf in its den.

"You were saying, brother?" Ezra whispered. The quiet deadliness in his tone made the temperature in the room plummet.

Griffin staggered backward, his boots tangling in the edge of the Persian rug, and he fell hard onto his backside. "Ezra... wait... I was just—it was a misunderstanding—I was talking about estate management—"

Ezra didn't speak. He walked across the room with slow, deliberate strides, his eyes never leaving Griffin. When he reached his half-brother, Ezra reached down with one gloved hand, grabbed Griffin by the expensive silk lapels of his suit jacket, and hoisted a grown man off the floor with effortless, terrifying strength.

"You threatened my daughter," Ezra said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You demanded access to my vault under my own roof while my body was supposedly still warm in a morgue. And you called her a brat."

"Ezra, please! We're family!" Griffin choked out, his legs kicking uselessly in the air, his face turning a deep, suffocating shade of purple.

"Family," Ezra repeated the word as if it tasted like poison. "My father warned me about the enemies who sleep under the same roof. I thought he was talking about rivals. I didn't realize he was talking about parasites."

With a sudden, violent motion, Ezra threw Griffin across the room. Griffin crashed heavily into a mahogany bookshelf, sending porcelain vases and leather-bound books raining down around him before he crumpled into an unmoving heap on the floor, groaning in pain.

Ezra didn't look back at him.

He knelt down immediately, his cold exterior melting away in an instant as he opened his arms.

"Rosie," he whispered softly.

The little girl didn't hesitate. She broke away from Willa and threw herself into Ezra’s chest, wrapping her small arms around his neck, sobbing hysterically. "Daddy! Uncle Griffin was mean! He said bad things!"

Ezra buried his face in her dark curls, holding her so tightly his own hands trembled. "I know, sweetheart. I'm here. No one will ever touch you. Daddy is right here."

Over Rosie’s small shoulder, Ezra’s gaze met Willa Sinclair’s pale green eyes. She was standing by the sofa, trembling from head to toe, her cheeks stained with tears she hadn't allowed herself to shed until he arrived.

For the first time since he had walked into the house, Ezra spoke to her.

"Thank you for protecting her," he said, his voice thick with a raw emotion no one outside this room would ever witness.

Willa swallowed hard, her chest rising and falling rapidly. "She's all we have left of Nadia, Mr. Cross. I would have died before let him hurt her."

May you like

Ezra stood up, still cradling Rosie against his chest, and looked down at Griffin, who was just beginning to crawl toward the door, clutching his bruised ribs.

"Get out of my house, Griffin," Ezra said quietly. "If you are within five miles of Beacon Hill by sunrise, I won't just cut you out of the will. I'll feed you to the harbor."
