Chapter 5 - The Subpoena

By the end of the week, the legal offensive transformed from a localized skirmish into a full-scale institutional siege.
Rachel Stein didn't waste time playing nice. Working in tandem with a federal compliance investigator, her firm obtained an emergency federal subpoena compelling the bridal vendor in Dallas—Elite Elegance Bridal and Events—to surrender every invoice, communication log, and financial ledger linked to the unauthorized wire attempts originating from my mother's IP address.
Simultaneously, a formal affidavit detailing the fraudulent interstate police report filed by Linda Harper was delivered directly to the desk of the Chief of Police in Dallas, complete with timestamps, audio transcripts of her threatening voicemails, and certified copies of my bank records proving lawful, independent acquisition of my San Diego home.
I spent that weekend actually enjoying my house.
I bought a small, comfortable cream-colored loveseat from a local thrift store, washed the cushions twice, and pushed it against the living room wall facing the large picture window. I hung a cheap set of linen curtains that billowed softly whenever the ocean breeze drifted in through the cracked windowpane. I bought a potted fern and placed it on the wooden porch right next to the crooked light fixture, which I finally managed to rewire with the help of a YouTube tutorial and a pair of insulated pliers.
For the first time, when I sat on my front porch drinking morning coffee, I didn't feel like a fugitive hiding out from a hurricane. I felt like a landowner guarding her castle.
On Monday morning, my phone rang before I had even finished my toast.
It wasn't my mother. It wasn't my father.
It was an unfamiliar Dallas area code.
I swiped to answer, pressing the phone to my ear with caution.
"Is this Emily Harper?" a deep, weary male voice asked.
"Yes, speaking."
"Ms. Harper, this is Detective Vance with the Dallas Police Department's Financial Crimes and Integrity Division. I'm calling in reference to Case File 884-B regarding an alleged property theft and fund misappropriation reported by a Linda Harper."
My grip on the phone tightened. My heart gave a familiar, defensive lurch, expecting the worst. "Yes, Officer? My attorney has already provided—"
"Ma'am, let me stop you right there," Detective Vance interrupted, his tone shifting from professional coldness to palpable exhaustion. "We've completed our internal review of the initial filing, alongside the counter-affidavits and federal compliance disclosures submitted by your legal counsel, Ms. Stein. Furthermore, we executed a secondary interview with your mother this morning regarding the secondary financial logs provided by your banking institution."
He paused, letting out a heavy sigh that whistled through the receiver.
"Let's just say Mrs. Harper's story has... fallen apart completely," he continued. "She admitted under formal questioning that she fabricated the theft allegations to compel your financial compliance regarding a family wedding. She also failed to disclose that she attempted to access your private accounts using cached credentials."
A wave of hot, electric relief washed from the top of my skull down to my toes. I closed my eyes, leaning my forehead against the cool kitchen wall.
"What happens now?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Well, the initial criminal complaint has been formally dismissed and expunged from your record," Detective Vance said. "Furthermore, because your mother knowingly filed a false police report and utilized fraudulent interstate coercion tactics, the district attorney's office is reviewing whether they wish to pursue charges for filing a false report and wire fraud. Frankly, Ms. Harper? Your mother is currently in a great deal of legal trouble, and I’d suggest she retain a very good defense attorney of her own."
"Thank you, Detective," I said evenly. "I appreciate your time."

I hung up the phone, walked over to the kitchen counter, and stared at the quiet, empty room.
The war wasn't just won. The enemy had been disarmed by her own arrogance.
