Chapter 2 - THE MARCHETTI FORTRESS

An hour later, the rain had turned to sleet as Damian’s armored black SUV passed through the towering wrought-iron gates of the Marchetti estate on the outskirts of the city.

The estate was a fortress—high stone walls, patrolled perimeter guards, and security systems that rivaled a federal penitentiary. For years, the public whispered about the dark empire operating behind those gates. They called Damian Marchetti a monster, a ruthless boss who ruled the underworld with an iron fist.

They didn't know about the nursery.

When the SUV pulled up to the grand front entrance, Damian’s lead enforcer, a hulking man named Sal with a broken nose and a gentle heart, rushed out with large golf umbrellas to shield us from the freezing sleet.

Inside, the mansion was vast, warm, and illuminated by a roaring marble fireplace in the cavernous foyer.

The two little boys—who had fallen asleep in the back of the SUV, holding hands so tightly their knuckles were white—were carried upstairs by Sal and placed gently into two identical cribs in a sunlit, beautifully furnished nursery that looked as though it had been waiting for them for a lifetime.

I sat in a plush rocking chair by the fireplace, holding the little girl—whose name, according to the forged adoption papers Damian’s men had intercepted, was temporarily logged as Baby Girl Doe, but whom I instinctively knew was my Lily—while she slept against my chest.

Damian walked into the nursery carrying a steaming mug of hot tea and a dry woolen blanket. He handed them to me silently, his movements uncharacteristically gentle for a man of his size and reputation.

“Drink it,” he said quietly, leaning against the carved wooden mantlepiece. “You’re in shock. Anyone would be.”

I gripped the warm mug with both hands, my eyes stinging with fresh tears as I looked down at the soft dark curls of the little girl sleeping peacefully in my arms.

“Why?” I whispered, my voice cracking. “You’re Damian Marchetti. You control half the state. You could have turned the broker over to the feds, kept the children safe in a state facility, and walked away. Why bring them to me? Why hunt down my history?”

Damian looked down into the amber flames of the fireplace. For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the gentle ticking of a grandfather clock in the hallway.

“Because I know what it’s like to have everything stolen from you by people who think power gives them the right to play God,” Damian said, his voice tightening. He looked back at me, his dark eyes flashing with a cold, dangerous fury. “Four years ago, my brother and his wife were murdered in a staged hit ordered by a rival councilman who wanted their shipping contracts. They left behind a baby boy. I spent six months tearing this city apart until I found the men responsible.”

He stepped closer, looking down at Lily with an expression so fiercely protective it took my breath away.

“When my men intercepted that broker tonight and told me he was trafficking three toddlers whose mother had been told they were dead... something in my chest snapped. I looked at their hazel eyes, and I knew I couldn't just hand them over to the system. They belong here. And so do you.”

My heart skipped a beat. “Mr. Marchetti—Damian—I can’t stay here. Your enemies... the underworld, the people you fight every day... this place isn't safe for a mother and three toddlers.”

“Listen to me, Elena,” Damian said, his voice dropping into an absolute, unshakeable vow. “No one—not a rival boss, not a corrupt doctor, not a single soul on this earth—will ever lay a finger on you or these children as long as I am breathing. The gates of this estate are sealed. The men outside answer only to me. You are safe here.”
