Chapter 2 - THE GILDED CAGE AND THE OPEN DOOR

The Moretti estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, was not a house; it was a fortress of limestone, glass, and sprawling autumn gardens that swept down toward the edge of Long Island Sound.

When the Maybach rolled through the towering iron security gates, I expected to feel trapped. After all, I had spent the last three years of my life with Derek, trapped in a tiny, drafty apartment in Astoria, walking on eggshells, listening to him belittle my ambitions, and watching him slowly drain my savings for his high-stakes poker nights.

Instead, stepping out into the crisp evening air holding my baby daughter, I felt an overwhelming sense of profound peace.

Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper—a woman with silver hair pulled back into a crisp bun and eyes that missed nothing—greeted us at the grand double doors.

"Welcome home, Mrs. Moretti," Mrs. Gable said smoothly, bowing her head slightly.

I opened my mouth to correct her—I'm not his wife, I'm just...—but I caught myself. Legally, the ink on the birth certificate and the emergency guardianship papers Luca's legal team had filed during the drive meant our lives were now inextricably bound.

"Please, just Emma," I corrected gently, offering a small, tired smile. "And this is Lily."

"Little Miss Lily," Mrs. Gable repeated, a genuine warmth breaking through her formal exterior. She reached out and gently guided us toward a stunning suite on the second floor. "Mr. Moretti has instructed that the nursery adjoining your master suite be prepared immediately. Everything you and the child could possibly need has already been stocked."

The suite was breathtaking. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the moonlit waters of the Sound. A magnificent four-poster bed sat in the center of the bedroom, and through an open double door, I could see a sunlit nursery decorated in soft ivories, blush pinks, and warm gold accents.

An hour later, after Lily had been fed, burped, and safely tucked into her white crib, I walked out onto the private balcony overlooking the gardens.

The wind rustled through the oak trees. Footsteps approached quietly behind me, and a heavy, cashmere men's jacket settled over my shoulders.

I turned around. Luca stood there, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking less like a ruthless corporate titan and more like a man who was finally home.

"Is she sleeping?" he asked softly, leaning his forearms against the stone balustrade beside me.

"Like an angel," I murmured, pulling the cashmere jacket tighter around myself. It still carried his scent. "Luca... I still can't wrap my head around this. You don't owe me anything. You didn't even know my name until today."

"Names are just ink on paper, Emma," Luca said, turning his dark eyes toward mine. "What I saw in that hospital today was a woman standing tall while her entire world collapsed around her. You protected your daughter with every fiber of your being. That is the kind of strength money can't buy."

He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His touch sent a shiver down my spine that had nothing to do with the autumn chill.

May you like

"You are safe here," he promised, his voice dropping an octave, rich with an unshakable vow. "No one will ever make you feel small again. No one will ever threaten you or your child. The Moretti name is now your shield."

I looked up into his face, realizing with a sudden, racing heartbeat that I wasn't just safe—I was falling for the shadow billionaire who had just rewritten my entire destiny.
