Chapter 3 - THE CORPORATE TRAP

By 8:00 AM, the sleek glass offices of Vance & Sterling Legal on Brickell Avenue were already buzzing with morning energy.

I sat across from Richard in his corner office overlooking Biscayne Bay. A thick stack of financial audits, bank subpoenas, and digital surveillance logs lay spread across the mahogany desk. Lily was safely resting in the firm’s private executive suite under the care of Richard’s executive assistant, watching cartoons with a stack of sketchpads.

“The timing couldn't be better,” Richard said, tapping a pen against a certified bank statement. “Grant thinks he holds all the cards because he’s listed as the primary occupant on the apartment lease and he controls your joint household checking. But he made a fatal flaw.”

“What flaw?” I asked, sipping black coffee.

“Arrogance,” Richard smiled thinly. “When Grant funneled fifty thousand dollars from your family trust into Brooke’s shell company, he used his corporate email server at Moretti & Hayes Logistics—where he is the senior vice president of operations. We subpoenaed their internal server logs through an emergency injunction signed by Judge Alpert an hour ago.”

Richard spun his laptop around to show me a glowing chain of digital transactions.

“Not only did he embezzle from your private trust,” Richard continued, “but Moretti & Hayes is currently bidding on a multi-million-dollar municipal logistics contract with the city of Miami. Part of their federal compliance requirement is a clean corporate ledger and zero pending financial litigation. If the city auditor discovers that one of their senior VPs is actively laundering marital assets into a mistress's shell company to fund an adulterous household, the contract is dead instantly.”

My eyes narrowed as I stared at the screen. “And who owns Moretti & Hayes?”

“Dominic Moretti,” Richard said, leaning back in his leather chair. “The majority stakeholder and CEO. A very old-school, ruthless businessman who has zero tolerance for reckless subordinates risking his company's reputation.”

I stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window. Down below, the Miami traffic crawled along Brickell Avenue in the morning sun.

“Grant has a board meeting at Moretti & Hayes this afternoon at two o'clock,” I said quietly. “He’s scheduled to present the municipal logistics proposal.”

Richard raised an eyebrow. “He is? How do you know that?”

“Because he bragged about it every night on FaceTime before he stopped answering my calls,” I replied, turning around with a cold, perfect smile. “He told me that if he landed this contract, he’d finally make partner and we’d ‘never have to worry about money again.’ By ‘we,’ of course, he meant him and Brooke.”

Richard laughed—a sharp, approving sound. “Well, Emily. It looks like you have a flight to catch. Not to Seattle this time, but straight to the boardroom.”
