Chapter 4 - THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

By Tuesday morning, the corporate headquarters of Whitmore Holdings in downtown Chicago was a battlefield masquerading as a boardroom.
Margaret Whitmore and Ethan had wasted no time. Assuming Daniel was paralyzed by grief and confusion, they had called an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors. Margaret’s plan was swift and brutal: invoke a psychiatric contingency clause in the company bylaws to declare Daniel mentally unfit, strip him of his CEO title, and transfer control to Ethan.
Daniel walked into the glass-walled boardroom precisely at 9:00 AM, looking completely immaculate in a tailored midnight-blue suit. He did not look like a broken man. He looked like an executioner.
Marcus and a team of five elite corporate litigators flanked him.
The chatter in the room died instantly. Margaret, sitting at the head of the table, narrowed her eyes. Ethan visibly swallowed hard.
“Daniel,” Margaret said, projecting a tone of maternal concern for the board members. “We didn't expect you. Given your... episode this weekend, we thought you would be resting at a facility.”
“Sit in my chair again, Margaret, and I will have security throw you through the glass,” Daniel said softly.
The board members gasped. Daniel walked to the head of the table, forcing his mother to stand up and retreat a step. He dropped a thick, leather-bound dossier onto the mahogany table.
“Before we discuss my mental health,” Daniel addressed the board, “let’s discuss the forensic audit my team conducted over the last forty-eight hours. Ethan, you’ve embezzled thirty million dollars from the European real estate division to cover gambling debts and private security firms. Specifically, a firm known for arson and intimidation.”
Ethan turned pale. “That’s—that’s a lie! He’s crazy!”
“And you, Mother,” Daniel said, turning to Margaret with eyes as cold as absolute zero. “You have been using company funds to pay hush money to a Dr. Elias Aris at the Blackwood Alpine Clinic. A clinic where, I might add, you orchestrated the kidnapping of my children and the murder of my wife.”
Chaos erupted in the boardroom. Board members began shouting, standing up in shock.
“Slander!” Margaret shrieked, her composed facade finally shattering completely. “He’s delusional! The children are actors! He hired a prostitute’s kids to steal the family trust!”
Daniel simply pressed a button on the remote control in his hand. The massive presentation screen at the end of the room flickered to life. It displayed two documents side-by-side.
“On the left,” Daniel said, his voice cutting through the noise like a knife, “is a legally binding, court-ordered DNA test completed yesterday by the federal authorities, confirming that Ivy and Skye are my biological daughters, and Claire was their mother. On the right, is a sworn, videotaped confession from Dr. Aris, who was detained by federal marshals at O'Hare airport last night trying to flee to Switzerland.”
Margaret staggered backward, grabbing the back of her chair for support. She looked at the screen, watching the video of Dr. Aris detailing exactly how Margaret ordered Claire’s death.
“No,” Margaret whispered. “No, no, no.”
“The FBI is waiting in the lobby,” Daniel said, adjusting his cuffs casually. “They have warrants for your arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, and corporate fraud. Ethan is named as an accessory after the fact, alongside federal embezzlement charges.”
The heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open. Six federal agents in dark windbreakers marched into the room, handcuffs already drawn.
Ethan broke down sobbing, dropping to his knees. “I didn't want to kill her, Daniel! I swear! Mother made me do the cover-up! She said you would ruin the family!”
Margaret didn't cry. As the agents pulled her hands behind her back and clamped the cold steel around her wrists, she glared at Daniel with pure, unadulterated venom.
“You are destroying your legacy for a weak woman and two brats,” she spat.

Daniel leaned in close, his voice a low rumble meant only for her.
“They are my legacy. And you are nothing but a ghost.”
