Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Future (1500 words)

Two years later.
Spring had returned once again, painting our suburban neighborhood in breathtaking shades of lavender, white, and emerald green.
Today was a special day: Ava’s eighth birthday.
Our backyard was transformed into a wonderland of colorful balloons, long tables laden with food, and a giant bouncy castle inflated on the far side of the lawn. Dozens of neighborhood kids, classmates, and family friends were running around, their happy screams and laughter filling the warm air.
Lucas, now a sturdy, energetic four-year-old, was bouncing wildly inside the castle, wearing a tiny superhero cape that matched his sister’s.
Ava stood near the patio table, surrounded by her friends as she prepared to blow out the candles on her birthday cake—a magnificent, three-tiered chocolate cake with golden glitter and fresh strawberries.
I stood beside Claire and my mother, watching my daughter’s glowing face.
“Look at her, Daryl,” my mother whispered, tears of joy sparkling in her eyes. “She’s so strong. Just like her mother was.”
“She’s stronger,” I smiled, squeezing my mother’s shoulder. “She survived the storm and came out shining.”
Detective Vance walked over, holding a paper plate stacked high with grilled ribs. “Hey, Daryl! Great party. You think I can get the recipe for this barbecue sauce?”
“Top secret military intelligence, Vance,” I teased. “You don't have the security clearance.”
Everyone laughed—a real, rich, warm sound that echoed through the sunny yard.
Ava looked up from her cake, her eyes sweeping across the crowd of people who loved her. Then, her gaze landed on me.
“Make a wish, Ava!” her friends chanted. “Make a wish!”
Ava closed her eyes tightly, took a deep breath, and blew out all eight candles in a single, powerful puff of air.
The crowd erupted in cheers and applause.
Ava ran over to me, wrapping her arms tightly around my waist. “Daddy! Do you know what I wished for?”
I kneeled down to her eye level, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. “What did you wish for, sweetie?”
“I wished that we stay right here, just like this, forever,” she said softly, her clear blue eyes filled with absolute trust and peace.
I pulled her into a tight, warm hug, holding my daughter against my heart—the heart that had fought through dark betrayals, murderous plots, and unimaginable grief to give her this moment of pure, uninterrupted childhood bliss.
“Your wish is already granted, baby,” I promised, looking up at the bright, open sky where a single white dove soared high above the trees. “We are home. And we are never letting go.”
