Chapter 4 - THE TRUTH UNMASKED

Two weeks later, the downtown skyline of Columbus, Ohio, looked different to Lucas Albright.

The clouds had parted, and for the first time in over a year, the sun felt warm against his skin. He was back in his own home, sitting at his kitchen table, watching Isabelle eat a bowl of cereal while laughing at a cartoon on television.

The fallout from Judge Cross’s ruling had been catastrophic for Victory Capital.

Federal investigators, armed with the unredacted server logs extracted by the court, raided the corporate headquarters downtown. They discovered a massive, systemic embezzlement scheme engineered by Lawrence Vance and three corrupt board members—a scheme designed to siphon millions into offshore accounts while framing innocent mid-level software engineers like Lucas as scapegoats.

Lawrence Vance was arrested at his country club while trying to board a private flight to the Bahamas. Andrew Vale was disbarred, facing criminal charges for obstruction of justice and official misconduct.

And Lucas’s name was completely, publicly cleared across every major newspaper in the state.

A sharp, polite knock echoed at the front door.

Lucas stood up, walking across the hardwood floor of the entryway. When he pulled the door open, his breath caught in his throat.

Standing on the porch was a sleek, black sedan. But in front of the door, leaning slightly against a pair of custom forearm crutches, was Judge Harrison Cross.

He looked exhausted, his face pale and strained with intense physical effort, his legs trembling inside his tailored trousers, but his jaw was set with absolute, unyielding determination. Behind him, a physical therapist hovered anxiously, holding a stabilization harness.

Lucas stared in absolute shock. “Your Honor... what are you—how did you...?”

Judge Cross exhaled a sharp, ragged breath, gritting his teeth as he forced his right foot forward, taking one agonizing, miraculous step across the threshold of the Albright home.

“Your daughter,” Judge Cross panted, a slow, hard-earned smile breaking across his stern face, “is a very stubborn negotiator, Mr. Albright.”

Isabelle came running down the hallway, stopping dead in her tracks when she saw the judge standing on his own two feet. Her hands flew to her mouth, and her eyes sparkled with pure, unfiltered joy.

“You did it!” Isabelle gasped, clapping her hands. “You stood up!”

Judge Cross took one more shaky, determined step forward, resting his weight against the crutches, looking down at the little girl with a profound, life-altering gratitude.

“I told you, Isabelle,” Judge Cross said, his voice ringing with a strength he hadn't felt in five long years. “Truth leaves trails. And sometimes... it gives you back your legs.”
