Chapter 6 - A New Spring

Six months later, the spring breeze carried the scent of fresh-cut grass and blossoming lilacs across our backyard patio.

It was a Saturday afternoon, and the sun was warm and golden, casting a beautiful, unobstructed glow over the long wooden picnic table we had built together. There were no rented balloon arches, no three-tier designer cakes meant to exclude, and no cold, judgmental eyes watching our every move.

Instead, the table was laden with simple homemade sandwiches, a giant bowl of fresh fruit, and a lopsided chocolate cake that Lily and I had baked from scratch, complete with too many rainbow sprinkles and a candle shaped like a smiling dinosaur.

Lily was running across the lawn in a bright yellow sundress—the very same one Patricia had scorned, though it now had a few cheerful patches sewn onto the hem where she had scraped her knee climbing our backyard oak tree. Her hair flew behind her in soft brown waves, her laughter ringing out across the yard as she chased our new golden retriever puppy, Barnaby Junior, who bounded clumsily through the tall grass.

Elena sat across from me at the picnic table, sipping iced tea and smiling as she watched the kids play.

"You know," Elena said softly, setting her glass down on the wood and looking around our vibrant yard. "It's amazing how much light gets in once you finally break the windows."

I smiled, reaching across the table to clink my glass against hers. The sound was bright, clear, and filled with genuine joy—not a warning, but a celebration.

"It really is," I agreed, looking over at my daughter as she ran back toward us, her face flushed with happy exhaustion, holding up a wildflower she had picked from the garden.

"Mom, look! I found a yellow one!" Lily cheered, rushing up to my side and planting the flower proudly behind my ear.

I pulled her into my arms, burying my face in her soft hair, breathing in the scent of sunshine and freedom. The past was behind us, locked away where it belonged. Our home was safe, our hearts were whole, and for the first time in our lives, our future belonged entirely to us.
