Chapter 4 - THE TWENTY-ROW WALK AND THE RETRIEVAL OF PROOF

The remainder of the flight from Seattle to Denver passed in a surreal blur of shared snacks, quiet revelations, and tentative smiles.
Luke quickly decided that his newly discovered father was exceptionally fun, especially after Damon used his tablet to pull up animated cartoons and high-definition satellite maps of the earth. Violet eventually woke up, rubbed her eyes, and crawled straight onto Damon’s lap, boldly poking his left cheek to check if his dimple was real.
Damon sat frozen under her tiny finger, laughing through a choked breath as he looked up at Cassandra with an expression of pure, unadulterated awe.
Yet, despite the fragile peace inside the bulkhead suite, Cassandra knew the nightmare wasn't entirely over.
“Evelyn Vance,” Cassandra said quietly while the twins were engrossed in a cartoon. “Even if she intercepted my letters and forged your signature on the divorce decree, she’s no longer your employee. If we try to legally untangle this mess, she’ll have a team of corporate lawyers protecting her.”
“Evelyn isn't protecting anyone anymore,” Damon replied coldly, tapping away on his satellite phone. “Two months ago, my internal security audit caught her embezzling seed-capital from our philanthropic foundation. I had her arrested, her assets frozen, and she’s currently sitting in a federal holding facility in King County awaiting trial on six counts of wire fraud and document forgery.”
Cassandra’s eyes widened. “She’s in prison?”
“She’s facing twelve years in a federal penitentiary,” Damon corrected grimly. “And when we land in Denver in twenty minutes, my legal team is going to tack on felony identity theft, mail tampering, and custodial interference. By tomorrow morning, Evelyn Vance’s life will be completely, permanently dismantled.”
He set his phone down, reached across the table, and finally closed his warm, strong hand over Cassandra’s.
“Cassie,” Damon said, his voice dropping an octave, steady and absolute. “I know an apology doesn't fix three lost years. I know no amount of money or power can give us back the first steps I missed, the sleepless nights you handled entirely alone, or the fear you felt raising my children without me.”
“Damon...”
“I’m not asking for forgiveness tonight,” he interrupted gently, squeezing her fingers. “I’m asking for a chance. A chance to be the father they deserve, and the partner you should have had every single day since we said I do.”
Cassandra looked down at their joined hands. For three years, she had built an armor of absolute independence, convincing herself she needed no one. But looking into Damon’s eyes—seeing the fierce, protective love shining there—she realized the armor had only been a heavy shell protecting a heart that never stopped loving him.
“You have a lot of making up to do, Mr. Prescott,” Cassandra whispered, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through.
Damon’s answering grin was radiant, complete with the deep dimple Violet was currently poking again. “Starting with a very long conversation, a proper ring, and a Christmas morning our kids will never forget.”
An hour later, the Boeing 777 touched down smoothly on the snow-dusted tarmac of Denver International Airport.
As the first-class passengers began gathering their carry-ons, Damon stood up, sliding his tailored jacket back over his broad shoulders. He hoisted Luke onto his right hip and held Violet securely by her small hand.
Cassandra walked beside them down the jet bridge, stepping out into the bustling, brightly lit terminal decorated with giant pine trees and twinkling holiday lights.
A team of four dark-suited corporate security guards and a senior family law attorney from Denver were already waiting near the gate, holding a digital tablet and looking ready to mobilize an entire army.
When the attorney caught sight of Damon—flanked not by business associates, but by a glowing woman and two identical toddlers holding his exact green eyes—the man’s jaw dropped in absolute astonishment.
“Mr. Prescott?” the attorney stammered, checking his tablet. “We received your encrypted data packet regarding the forged dissolution files, but... who are—”

“Meet my family, Robert,” Damon said, his voice ringing with a deep, triumphant resonance that carried across the crowded terminal. He wrapped his free arm securely around Cassandra’s waist, pulling her flush against his side. “And start drafting emergency injunctions immediately. We have three lost years to reclaim, and not a single second left to waste.”
As the snow fell gently outside the massive terminal windows, Cassandra rested her head against Damon’s shoulder, watching Luke and Violet giggle as airport security handed them festive candy canes. The storm had finally cleared, and for the first time in three long years, they were finally flying true north, exactly where they belonged.
