Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

The sun was sinking low over our new backyard, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of violet, amber, and deep rose gold.
The air smelled of fresh-cut grass, blooming gardenias, and the sweet barbecue smoke drifting lazily from our own grill—operated by Ethan, who had spent the last three months proving every single day through his actions, his devotion, and his unwavering protection that he was a true father and a true partner.
Lily was running across the lush green lawn in her new pink sneakers, chasing a golden retriever puppy we had adopted from the local rescue shelter two weeks earlier. Her hair bounced in soft ringlets, and the faint, silvery line of a healing burn along her jawline was barely visible in the warm evening light—a fading reminder of a battle we had won, rather than a scar of defeat.
She laughed out loud, a pure, uninhibited sound that echoed up into the branches of the ancient oak tree above us.
Ethan walked over to where I stood on the back porch, resting a mug of iced tea on the wooden railing. He wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder as we watched our daughter play.
"Penny for your thoughts?" he murmured softly against my neck.
I leaned back into his warmth, taking a slow sip of my tea, watching the horizon stretch out endlessly before us, completely clear of shadows, gatekeepers, and monsters in disguise.
"I was just thinking," I smiled, turning my head to kiss his cheek. "We finally made it home."

Ethan tightened his arms around me, his breath steady and secure.
"Yeah," he whispered, looking out at our daughter racing across the grass under a sky full of unbroken light. "We’re home for good."
