Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

By Wednesday morning, the shockwaves had completely leveled Richard’s universe.
Not only had Sterling Capital frozen his corporate accounts, but his father’s construction firm had also been hit with an aggressive forensic audit by federal tax inspectors—triggered, unknown to Richard, by a routine compliance flag pulled by Julian’s legal team. Their credit lines were revoked, their subcontractors walked off active job sites, and their bank accounts were locked tight under suspicion of corporate malfeasance.
Panicked, Richard rushed to his parents’ sprawling estate in Great Neck, hoping to find refuge or financial bailouts.
Instead, he found his mother, Olivia, weeping hysterically in the formal parlor while his father, Thomas Sr., paced the Persian rug like a caged tiger, holding a cancellation notice from their exclusive country club.
“They locked our accounts, Richard!” Thomas roared the second his son walked through the double doors. “Our private banking division just called! Every trust, every line of credit, every investment portfolio managed by Sterling-affiliated banks has been frozen pending a federal compliance inquiry! What the hell did you get us mixed up in?!”
“I didn't do anything!” Richard yelled back, his composure finally shattering completely. “It’s Maya! Somehow—I don't know how—she’s got people protecting her! Some lunatic billionaire from Manhattan just seized my office building because of a fight we had at Lily’s birthday party!”
Olivia stopped crying, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she stared at her son. “A... a billionaire? Maya? Are you insane? She’s an orphan from a working-class diner in the Village! You told us she had no family!”
“I don't know who she really is!” Richard screamed, pacing the floor, running his hands frantically through his hair. “She never talked about her past! She always wore cheap clothes, drove an old Civic, and let me pay for everything while she worked at that stupid bakery! But now... now my phone is blowing up with foreclosure notices, Vanessa dumped me the second her firm fired her for ethics violations, and the police are investigating our corporate tax filings!”
Just then, the heavy oak front door chimes rang out through the grand foyer.
Two men in dark suits stepped into the parlor without waiting to be invited. One of them held a thick leather binder stamped with the golden seal of the New York Supreme Court.
“Richard Vance?” the lead agent asked flatly.
Richard froze, his heart pounding against his ribs like a trapped bird. “Y-yes?”
“You are formally served with a petition for emergency divorce proceedings, a restraining order barring you within five hundred feet of Maya St. Claire and minor child Lily St. Claire, and a civil summons for domestic battery and financial fraud.”
The agent tossed the heavy document onto the glass coffee table, where it landed with a dull, sickening thud right beside Olivia’s empty teacup.

“Have a nice day, Mr. Vance,” the agent said, turning on his heel and walking out.
Silence descended upon the parlor, heavier and more terrifying than anything Richard had ever experienced in his sheltered, privileged life. The castle of sand he had built on cruelty, debt, and stolen dignity had finally washed out to sea.
