Chapter 2 - THE UNRAVELING OF THE HAWK

The ride back to my house was quiet, save for the hum of the engine and the radio playing softly in the background. But my mind was moving at a thousand miles an hour.

By the time I pulled into the driveway of our suburban home—the house Diego’s lawyer had demanded I surrender in the divorce settlement—my phone was already vibrating incessantly against the cup holder.

Missed Call: Diego (14) Text: "Laura, please, we need to talk. It was a mistake. I was stressed about the business..." Text: "Paola went crazy at the clinic. She packed up and left. Please, let's just go back to how things were."

I didn't open the messages. I swiped them away, got out of the car, and walked up the front steps.

As I unlocked the front door, I realized how much had changed in just two hours. The house didn't feel like a sanctuary anymore, nor did it feel like a prison. It felt like a property asset. And according to the prenuptial agreement we had signed eight years ago—one that Diego had drafted himself to protect his initial real estate investments—any infidelity clause or breach of marital trust involving abandonment of the primary domicile carried massive financial penalties.

Diego hadn't just walked out; he had deserted the marital home to cohabitate with a coworker, officially triggering the fault-based asset forfeiture clauses.

An hour later, the doorbell rang.

I opened it to find not Diego, but his mother, Elena Senior—the very woman who had marched into my kitchen a week prior carrying two black garbage bags to collect her son's laundry while sneering at my belly.

Her posture was stiff, but the arrogant spark in her eyes had been replaced by a thin, nervous glaze.

"Laura," she said, attempting to push past me into the foyer. "We need to speak. Diego is beside himself. He’s made a terrible mistake, but you know how men get when they're under pressure..."

I didn't move an inch. I stood squarely in the doorway, blocking her path.

"You can't come in, Elena," I said calmly.

Her jaw tightened. "I am your mother-in-law! Have some respect—"

"You lost the right to call yourself that the moment you stood in my kitchen and called me a disgraceful gold-digger based on your son's lies," I interrupted, my voice steady and cold. "And legally speaking, you are trespassing on property that is currently under an emergency freeze by my legal counsel."

Elena blinked, stepping back as if I had slapped her. "Legal counsel? What are you talking about? Diego is your husband!"

"Not for much longer," a sharp, professional voice echoed from behind her.

Arthur Vance, my attorney—a man who made corporate sharks look like goldfish—stepped out from the walkway, holding a thick leather briefcase. He flashed a brilliant, shark-like smile at Elena.

"Mrs. Hawthorne," Arthur greeted smoothly. "Or should I say, representatives of the Hawthorne estate. I’m Arthur Vance, senior partner at Vance & Sterling. I’m here to serve formal notice that your son’s recent departure from this residence, combined with documented admissions of adultery and financial malfeasance, has triggered the automatic forfeiture clauses of the prenuptial trust."

Elena’s face turned the color of curdled milk. "Forfeiture? That's absurd! Diego owns this company! He owns this house!"

"Correction," Arthur corrected, pulling a folded document from his briefcase. "Diego managed the holding company using capital backed by your family’s declining real estate portfolio. However, due to recent margin calls and poor investments—which your son desperately tried to hide by liquidating joint marital assets—the primary debt instruments were acquired last week by a private wealth management firm."

Elena stared at him, her voice trembling. "What firm?"

May you like

"Sterling Global Capital," Arthur replied with a devastating smile. "Owned and operated exclusively by the estate of Laura’s late uncle. In short, Mrs. Hawthorne... your son is broke. And your family estate is currently renting its office space from a corporation owned by the woman you just tried to evict."

Elena opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She clutched her designer handbag like a lifeline, turned on her heel, and practically fled down the driveway toward her idling Mercedes.
