Chapter 8 - The Verdict

The final ruling came down on a rainy Friday afternoon in late November.
Courtroom 3B was packed to capacity. Tyler sat at the defense table staring blankly at his hands, his defense attorney looking thoroughly exhausted after failing to suppress the devastating evidence introduced during the trial. My parents sat behind him, hollowed out, their arrogant posture completely collapsed into bitter resignation.
I sat beside Victoria Vance, holding a small leather folder containing Ethan’s latest physical therapy clearance report.
Judge Harrison entered the courtroom, adjusting his robes before taking his seat. The entire gallery stood in silence.
"Please be seated," the judge said, his voice measured and authoritative.
He looked down at a thick stack of papers on his desk, clearing his throat before delivering his judgment.
"This court has reviewed all criminal evidence, police reports, medical documentation, video footage, and historical financial ledgers submitted in the matter of State v. Tyler Hayes and the consolidated family court petition regarding the custody and protection of the minor child, Ethan Hayes."
Judge Harrison paused, lifting his gaze to scan the courtroom until his eyes locked onto Tyler, then my parents, and finally on me.
"What occurred on the afternoon of July 18th was not an accident," the judge began, his tone ringing with absolute clarity. "It was an act of unprovoked, violent aggression committed by an adult against a nine-year-old child. Furthermore, the subsequent behavior of the grandparents—Robert and Eleanor Hayes—demonstrates a persistent, dangerous pattern of psychological manipulation, evidence suppression, and systemic endangerment that makes them entirely unfit to have any contact with the minor child."
My mother let out a muffled sob, burying her face in her hands.
"Accordingly, the court finds the defendant, Tyler Hayes, guilty on all counts of felony child endangerment and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is sentenced to three years in state penitentiary, with no eligibility for probation or early parole."
A sharp, audible gasp escaped Tyler’s lips. He slumped forward, his head hitting the mahogany defense table with a dull thud as two bailiffs immediately stepped behind him, clicking handcuffs onto his wrists.
"Furthermore," Judge Harrison continued, raising his voice slightly over the commotion, "the family court petition for permanent, unconditional termination of all grandparent visitation, contact, and legal association regarding Robert and Eleanor Hayes and the minor child Ethan Hayes is hereby GRANTED in full. Any attempt by the respondents to contact the minor child or his father will result in immediate felony contempt of court charges and mandatory jail time."
Judge Harrison struck his gavel one final time.
Clang.
