Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Patriarch

Elaine’s criminal trial never made it to a full jury, thanks in large part to the mountain of damning evidence assembled by the prosecution.

Faced with Dr. Henderson’s expert testimony, the paramedics' emergency logs, the high-definition police body-cam footage of Elaine proudly defending her actions on the front porch, and Arthur Vance realizing his client’s defense strategy was legally indefensible, the defense team was forced to negotiate a plea deal.

In exchange for the state dropping the primary felony child endangerment charge down to a high-level gross misdemeanor of reckless endangerment and contributing to the unruliness of a minor, Elaine pleaded guilty.

The sentencing hearing was swift.

The judge handed down a sentence of two years of supervised probation, two hundred hours of mandatory community service working with pediatric healthcare advocacy groups, mandatory anger management counseling, and a permanent, five-year restraining order protecting Lily and our household.

The social fallout within Columbus’s insular country-club circles was swift and merciless.

Robert Sr., humiliated by his wife’s criminal conviction and the subsequent freezing of their social club memberships, attempted to distance himself publicly, which only resulted in Elaine filing for a contentious, multi-million-dollar divorce that dragged their toxic marriage through the local tabloids for months. Their friends vanished like ghosts; their phone calls went unreturned; and the untouchable Sterling dynasty crumbled into an embarrassing footnote of suburban gossip.

Daniel received a brief, frantic voicemail from his father six months after the trial, demanding that Daniel intervene in the divorce proceedings and testify on Elaine’s behalf to protect the family name.

Daniel listened to the voicemail once, deleted it without a second thought, and blocked his father’s number permanently.

We didn't need their drama. We didn't need their approval. We had each other, and most importantly, we had our daughter back, healthy, happy, and breathing freely.
