Chapter 4 - THE PENTHOUSE AT THE GRAND MERIDIAN

The Grand Meridian Hotel was a forty-story monument of glass and limestone standing on the edge of Midtown Manhattan, catering to billionaires, foreign dignitaries, and men who paid cash to ask no questions.

At 2:15 a.m., Suite 1200 on the top floor was dark, quiet, and entirely unprepared for what was coming.

The master key card—stolen from the night desk clerk fifteen minutes earlier by a Moretti operative—clicked softly in the deadbolt.

The heavy oak door swung open.

Four Moretti enforcers entered in absolute, synchronized silence, their tactical gear absorbing the ambient light from the hallway. Behind them walked Alessandro, his dark overcoat trailing behind him like the wings of a vulture, his Sig Sauer held low and steady in his right hand.

Inside the expansive penthouse living room, three men sat around a low glass coffee table strewn with maps of the Moretti estate, architectural blueprints of the mansion, and stacks of banded hundred-dollar bills.

Dmitri Petrov—a massive, heavily tattooed enforcer from the St. Petersburg Bratva—looked up just as the bedroom door was kicked off its hinges.

"What the—"

He never finished the sentence.

An enforcer’s silenced weapon fired twice. Dmitri’s two associates slumped backward into their leather armchairs, crimson flowers blooming across their white linen shirts before they even hit the floor.

Dmitri scrambled backward, his hand diving beneath the cushions of the sofa for his Makarov pistol.

Before his fingers could wrap around the grip, Alessandro stepped into the center of the room, raised his weapon, and fired a single shot directly into Dmitri’s right shoulder.

The Russian screamed, collapsing sideways onto the glass table, shattering it into a thousand glittering pieces.

Alessandro walked forward, stood over him, and planted the heel of his Italian leather shoe directly onto the bloody wound in Dmitri’s shoulder, pressing down with calculated cruelty until the man shrieked in agony.

"You had plans for my estate, Dmitri," Alessandro said, his voice chillingly calm as he leaned down. "You had plans for my gates. You had plans for a little girl who was doing nothing more than trying to wash a coffee stain out of a shirt."

Dmitri gasped for breath, spitting blood onto the carpet. "You... you're a dead man, Moretti... The Bratva... the whole syndicate... they'll hunt you down to the last stone..."

"Let them try," Alessandro whispered.

He raised his pistol and fired a second shot into Dmitri’s other shoulder, disabling him completely. He turned to Marco, who stood by the entrance holding a encrypted satellite phone.

"Clean this up," Alessandro commanded, turning toward the elevator doors. "Burn the blueprints. Send the money to the orphanage on 4th Street in Sophia’s name."

"Where are you going, Boss?" Marco asked, watching him closely.

Alessandro stopped at the open elevator doors. He looked down at his hands—hands stained with rain, blood, and the memory of cold tile floors in a laundry room where a three-year-old girl had looked up at him with unspooled, innocent hope.

"I'm going home," Alessandro said quietly. "Emma is waiting."
